Steven Sandor has more than 30 years of experience as a writer and editor. His 11th book, Leveling the Ice: Confronting Racism in Hockey, was published by Beacon Press in 2025. He has covered the NHL for decades and has worked inside the Edmonton Oilers organization. He has also worked as a soccer commentator, appearing on Sportsnet, One Soccer, TSN, and CBC.
Like many Canadians, hockey is one of his great passions. But sport has always been deeply rooted in his family life — his family has long been involved in baseball and soccer, and his father played soccer at a high level in Hungary before escaping to Canada with his mother in 1956. Sport remains a serious part of his life. He is also an avid Formula 1 fan and cares perhaps a little too much about aerodynamics, barge boards, and tire compounds.

I consider “Losing My Edge” by LCD Soundsystem my personal theme song.
“Fever Pitch” by Nick Hornby is the best sports book there is, because it explores why we idolize athletes whom we don’t know personally at all. Do not watch the awful movie adaptations of this book.
Dress codes. White jackets and black ties, like every casino scene from every James Bond film.
With a group of friends, we once put money on a horse named “Bay Street Bully” because we liked the name. It was a long shot. That horse paid for a fantastic steak dinner.
My Hungarian lineage has me screaming for water polo.
“Chess” by Stefan Zweig. It’s about a cutthroat chess match between a savant and an aloof chess champion on a cruise ship.
I think a fusion of gambling games. What if we could mix poker and fantasy sports? The person who wins the hand gets the next pick. Or you could “bet” your picks.
