Super Bowl LV Odds: What Sportsbooks Tell Us About The Big Game

Super Bowl LV is just about four weeks away with the Divisional Round kicking off this weekend. With only eight teams remaining, oddsmakers are making it clear as to who they believe is the favorite to win the Super Bowl.

As we have seen over the history of the NFL and this past Wild Card weekend, an upset can occur at any time. Football is truly a week-to-week game and anything can occur within the white lines on any given Sunday. But, the majority of the bookmakers are confident in the Kansas City Chiefs repeating as Super Bowl Champions. 

They are also in concurrence that if an NFC team were to win the Super Bowl, it would be the Green Bay Packers as displayed in the above table. 

Essentially, what this means is that an overwhelming majority of people are betting on the Chiefs to repeat as Champions. That is the reason they have the highest odds. Subsequently, if you wanted to place a bet on the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl, a proper way of thinking about it would be as follows:

Betting The Underdog

Of all the remaining teams, the Cleveland Browns have the lowest odds of winning the Super Bowl. Each of the following sportsbooks mentioned above have the Browns at or above +2500. 

If one were looking to make a large chunk of money by betting the fewest, it’s not a bad idea to take the odds on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Each of the above sportsbooks has the Buccaneers odds of winning at +900. 

Since Week 14, Tom Brady has been on fire. He leads the league in the following categories: PFF passing grade (94.3), yards per attempt (9.7), passing touchdowns (14), and passing yards (1,714). Tampa Bay has also won six straight games on the road. They look to make that seven as they head down to New Orleans this weekend. 

Popular Super Bowl Prop Bets

Over the last couple of seasons, prop bets in the Super Bowl have become a favorite amongst fans. With gambling now legalized in many states, prop bets in the Super Bowl have gained traction. 

Two of the more popular prop bets in the Super Bowl are the coin toss and color of the Gatorade. The coin toss is a 50/50 call as it’s either going to be heads or tails. The Gatorade prop bet gives you a bunch of different coloring options, such as orange, purple, and green just to name a few.

Fans have won and lost millions of dollars over the past couple of seasons on prop bets in the Super Bowl. Amongst other popular prop bets are kickoff returns. There will be a set number and fans have the option of betting the over or under. The same can be said for punt returns. The over/under of total yards is another prop bet. How many touchdowns a particular quarterback will throw or how many rushing touchdowns a running back will have is another prop bet. Again, there will be a set number, and fans are given the option of taking the over or under.

There are also other fun prop bets that include how long the halftime show will be. Fans are given a plethora of options to bet on to make the biggest game of the year even more exciting.

How The 2020 Super Bowl Playoffs Will Unfold

In what was an irregular 2020 NFL regular season, the playoffs continue to pose certain advantages for the road team. Certainly, the largest being no crowd noise. Although they can pump noise into the stadium, nothing can truly replicate the rowdy fans in the most crucial moments of a game.

This weekend that will be on display as the four road teams will not have to worry about the silent count or using hand motions as audibles. With that said, be on the lookout for the following upsets.

Potential Upsets In The Divisional Round

The NFL Divisional Round will be kicked off on Saturday in Green Bay, Wisconsin as the Rams take on the Packers. According to FanDuel, the Packers are favored by 6.5. On the surface, that may appear as a fair spread as the Packers did indeed finish the season with the best record in the NFC. But, keep in mind that the Rams are coming off an upset victory over the Seattle Seahawks and have one of the best defenses in the NFL. Remember, if you take the points on the Rams — in order for you to win — that means they either lose by 6 or less, or they outright win the game.

Another game that may very well see an upset is the Saturday night game featuring the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills. According to DraftKings, the Bills are favored by 3. These two teams are perhaps the hottest two teams left in the playoffs. That is why the spread isn’t so big. 

The other divisional games will feature the New Orleans Saints going up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Cleveland Browns (Chiefs, -10). One thing to keep in mind when placing a bet on the Saints game (Saints, -3) is that the Mercedes Benz dome will be empty. Perhaps what is the best fan base in the NFL, will have to watch this game on their couch rather than being side the dome.

Player Bets This Weekend

One last thing to keep in mind for the divisional round and moving forward is player bets. Similar to prop bets, player bets can include anything up to total yards, touchdowns, turnovers, etc. 

For example, in this week’s divisional round between the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams, you can place a bet on how many receptions WR DaVante Adams will record. At BetRivers, the over/under number is currently set at 6.5. In the 14 games Adams played this season, he only had 6 or fewer receptions in three of those. But, this one is tricky as he will be matched up with CB Jalen Ramsey for the majority of this game. 

Regardless, these kinds of player bets are a part of every game and they stem from receiving yards to rushing yards to any other statistical category imaginable.
