US Presidential Election Odds News Monthly Recap: July 2020

With just three months to go until election day, the race is heating up, and so is the wagering: As of Aug. 1, more than $72 million has been wagered on the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election.

All in all, July looked much like June did for President Donald Trump. His numbers have continued sagging, and his opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, has settled into a lead in the mid-20s.

Below is our week-by-week recap for July. Keep checking back for real-time 2020 US presidential election odds, which we compile from a wide range of sources.

July 27-31

Closing out July, President Donald Trump remains more than 26% down on the Bonus.com Election Odds Tracker, a trend that began in late May and has continued ever since.

The president has continued to face a firestorm of criticism over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has now killed nearly 150,000 Americans. His approach to race relations has also been continually questioned, most recently with his declaration he would not be attending the funeral services of Democratic Rep. and civil rights icon John Lewis.

The New York Yankees received criticism for inviting the president to throw out the ceremonial pitch at their game on Aug. 15, with Trump later deciding against the appearance, saying he instead needed the time to focus on the pandemic.

July 20-24

Former Vice President Joe Biden has grown his lead to more than 26% over President Donald Trump as the favorite to win the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The coronavirus outbreak continues to spiral out of control, with an average of more than 60,000 new infections reported daily and the death toll surpassing 140,000. The daily number of deaths in the U.S. stands around 1,000 each day. This is nearly double the average number of daily Covid-19 deaths from earlier in July.

Trump made headlines over the weekend with a wide-ranging interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace, which at times turned combative. Fox has been a frequent booster of the president, who can usually depend on the network for friendly, uncritical interviews. Wallace held Trump’s feet to the fire, however, including on Trump’s misleading claims about the U.S. death rate being among the lowest in the world.

Polling on handling of the pandemic has turned sharply against the president, with a new ABC News/Washington Post poll showing six in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump’s leadership during the crisis.

July 13-17

As we enter mid-July, the polls aren’t looking any better for President Donald Trump. As of Monday morning, July 13, former Vice President Joe Biden retains a more than 23% lead in the odds to win the 2020 US presidential election.

Trump has begun, albeit reluctantly, started to come around on wearing a mask, and was seen donning a face covering when he visited wounded service members at Walter Reed Medical Center this weekend. In recent weeks, fellow republicans have publicly urged the president to start wearing a mask in public in the hopes his fiercest supporters would do the same.

On Sunday July 11, the U.S. set a new record for coronavirus cases with 66,000 new confirmed infections. More than 15,000 of these cases were in Florida, which has become the new national epicenter of the pandemic.

July 6-10

The first full week of July saw President Donald Trump narrow the gap in his odds to win the 2020 US presidential election, but former Vice President Joe Biden remains nearly 20 points up on the incumbent as of July 9.

Trump’s numbers had been in free-fall throughout June, starting the month in a virtual tie with Biden but seeing his odds deficit reach as high as 27% over the course of the month.

Trump has received continued criticism for his handling of race relations in the wake of more than a month of nationwide protests against systemic racism, and coronavirus cases are hitting new daily records. The total number of U.S. cases of the virus is just shy of 3 million, with more than 50,000 new cases reported each day.

July 1-3

Heading into the July 4th holiday weekend, coronavirus cases in the U.S. are at record highs, surpassing daily infection totals from March, April and May.

Anthony Fauci, America’s top infectious disease expert, warned a Senate committee this week that the U.S. could see 100,000 new coronavirus cases per day.

The president will be at Mount Rushmore for a 4th of July fireworks show, where in spite of the rise in cases, S.D. Gov. Kristi Noem has said masks will be optional for attendees.

A new Pew Research poll out shows that Trump trails Biden 41-52 when it comes to who Americans trust to handle the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

As of this writing, Biden leads trump by approximately 23% as the favorite to win the 2020 US presidential election.
