Alberta’s iGaming Launch Comes 6 Days Before the World Cup Ends — Did Operators Miss Their Shot?

The countdown is on for Alberta’s regulated market launch.

On July 13, the Wild Rose Country will officially become the second Canadian province to legalize a regulated private online gambling market. However, Alberta’s market launch will be squarely in the middle of the biggest World Cup ever.

The tournament kicked off June 11 with 48 teams and a record 104 matches across Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. By the time Alberta sportsbooks can legally take a bet, more than a month of group-stage and knockout action will already be in the books.

According to Phil Gray, industry consultant and former Head of Sports Betting Operations at Sports Interaction, Alberta’s late start limits the customer-acquisition window for licensed operators during the tournament.

“They should have opened long before, to allow operators to have a seamless entry prior to the World Cup,” he said.

“That’s the province’s mistake. The gaming world has been planning this for years. It’s going to be one of the biggest betting events ever. Think half a dozen Superbowls in a month worth of revenues.”

1 in 8 Canadians Planned to Bet on the World Cup

A 2026 Gambling Report Study released by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada on June 9 revealed that 13% of Canadians were likely to place a FIFA World Cup bet during the tournament. The percentage increases to 49% among regular sports bettors.

Another study from YouGov Canada, commissioned by TonyBet, showed that 83% of Canadian iGamers will place bets on the World Cup. On top of that, 59% said they would be open to trying a new platform, with promotions (15%), bonuses (10%), and payout speed (10%) being the top three deciding factors for Canadian bettors.

From these numbers, we see a growing population that’s ready to seriously engage in the 2026 soccer buzz while having a genuinely open attitude about where they engage. The only problem is that in Alberta, Canadian iGamers have the province-run PlayAlberta sports betting platform as the only legal option available for placing bets in the 2026 FIFA World Cup prior to the July 13 iGaming market launch.

PlayAlberta’s World Cup Odds Can’t Match the Grey Market

While the platform offers a comprehensive lineup of World Cup bet types, the market depth, odds, and promotions don’t compare to what you would find at most grey market operators. Take a look at Caesars Sportsbook, which offered 10 times more futures betting markets than it did during the 2022 World Cup.

And while most Alberta players are still using sportsbooks that are operating in the province’s grey market, that’s set to shift on July 13, when offshore gambling within the province officially ceases.

Worth noting is that the transition isn’t guaranteed to be seamless. Not every operator currently serving Alberta bettors has confirmed a spot on the regulated side. For instance, William Hill, 1xBet, and several other popular sports betting brands have yet to appear or comment about making their way to Alberta’s regulated market. The question that remains is whether they’ll make the cut before launch, qualify for a compliance extension, or exit the market altogether.

So, when it comes to players who’ve built up loyalty, account balances, or open futures bets on such platforms, that uncertainty is worth watching closely as July 13 nears.

47 Operators Are Ready, But the Clock Is Tight

Around 50 iGaming operators have secured conditional licensing from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis (AGLC). While more are expected to join before launch, the numbers reveal dozens of private iGaming operators, including reputable brands such as Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and BallyBet, being in a strong position to go live on day one.

The catch is in the timing. With the market opening July 13 and the World Cup final wrapping up July 19 at East Rutherford, New Jersey, these operators are working with a six-day runway to capture a tournament that’s already been running for weeks. That’s a tight window to convert new sign-ups, especially with rival grey market platforms having had a running head start since kickoff.

What Alberta Bettors Should Do With Existing Accounts Before July 13

For Albertans who already hold active accounts with platforms that now carry conditional AGLC approval, the coming weeks are worth paying attention to. Operators transitioning into the regulated market will likely reach out directly, either by email, app notification, or both, with instructions on account migration, re-verification, or new registration steps required to keep playing legally after July 13. Ignoring those messages could mean losing access to an existing account or scrambling to re-register once the deadline hits.

It’s a different story for anyone betting through a platform that has not secured AGLC approval. Since unregulated operators are required to cease Alberta activity on the launch date, players on those platforms should look closely at how existing balances, open bets, and withdrawals will be handled.

Some unregulated books may settle up and shut down access quietly. Others may leave users chasing a payout from a platform that’s no longer legally allowed to operate in the province. Either way, it’s worth withdrawing what you can and reading the fine print now, rather than finding out the hard way once the market shifts.
