Alberta is set to open its regulated online gambling market to private operators on July 13, with 35 brands receiving approval to launch in the province. The list includes a number of top U.S. operators, highlighting the significant American presence expected in Alberta’s newly competitive market.

US heavyweights like BetRivers and DraftKings feature on this list, bringing with them a reputation that is well-established in Alberta. DraftKings is the official daily fantasy sports partner of the Canadian Football League (CFL), while BetRivers recently announced a sponsorship of CBC’s Olympic Games coverage, just two of the nine US brands that are already household names prior to Alberta’s iGaming market launch.

In other words, the expansion of U.S. iGaming brands into the province isn’t a gamble, but simply a logical next step

Alberta’s Approved List Has an American Accent

A host of recognizable names are featured on the AGLC iGaming registrants list. Nine of them carry American roots — and each one brings something distinct to Alberta’s emerging market.

BetRivers Canada

BetRivers arrives in Alberta with serious regulated market credentials. Already live across 15 U.S. states and Ontario, the Rush Street Gaming-owned platform is known for its player-friendly loyalty program (iRush), competitive odds, and a sportsbook that doesn’t sacrifice depth for simplicity. Its recent CBC Olympic Games sponsorship means many Albertans already know the name. Come July 13, they’ll get to finally experience the product.

DraftKings Canada

Few brands carry the weight that DraftKings does. Built on the back of daily fantasy sports before pivoting into full-scale online sports betting and casino, DraftKings has plenty to offer. It brings an established app, aggressive promotions, and a loyal player base. As the official DFS partner of the Canadian Football League, its arrival in Alberta feels more like a homecoming.

Caesars Sportsbook Canada

Caesars is an industry titan and owner of the World Series of Poker (WSOP). As one of the most recognizable names in global gaming, the Caesars Sportsbook transports its land-based casino empire into the digital space. Combine this with the generous Caesars Rewards loyalty program, and Albertans have access to a rewards ecosystem that extends well beyond online betting.

Caesars Palace Online Casino Canada

Where Caesars Sportsbook leads with sports, Caesars Palace Online Casino leads with glamour. The brand trades on the legendary Las Vegas identity of its brick-and-mortar alternative, offering a premium casino experience built around slots, table games, and live dealer options. Ideal for players who prefer the Vegas feel, less the flight.

Horseshoe Online Casino Canada

Another entry from the Caesars Entertainment stable. Horseshoe Online Casino targets the dedicated casino player. With a strong slots library and table game selection, it carves out a distinct lane from its sister brands. A part of a deliberate multi-brand strategy that ensures the Caesars portfolio captures as wide an audience as possible.

Golden Nugget Canada

Familiar with the luxurious Golden Nugget Casino Resort? Well, the Golden Nugget online casino replicates this experience virtually. In addition to being acquired by DraftKings in a 2022 deal, this brand has built one of the strongest online casino reputations across the 34 markets where it’s legal. Known for its extensive game library, DraftKings-powered platform, and consistent promotions, it appeals to the kind of player who prioritizes substance over flash. In Alberta, it fills the slot of a trusted, no-nonsense casino brand with genuine heritage behind it.

Bally Bet Sportsbook and Casino

Bally’s Corporation brings a combined online sportsbook and casino offering to Alberta, targeting players who want both products under one roof. With licenses across 15 US states and Ontario, Bally Bet brings both physical and digital gaming to players who don’t want to choose between sports betting and casino play.

Monopoly Casino and Sportsbook

One of the more distinctive entries on the list, Monopoly Casino and Sportsbook leverages one of the world’s most recognizable board game themes to create a gaming experience with built-in familiarity. It’s a brand that lowers the barrier to entry for casual players and curious first-timers who might be drawn in by the name before the product.

Vegas Club Casino

Rounding out the American contingent as of yet, Vegas Club Casino brings the allure of the Las Vegas identity to Alberta’s digital market. Targeting players drawn to the glamour and energy of Vegas-style gaming, it occupies a clear niche. One that’s aspirational, entertainment-first, and built for players who want their online casino experience to feel like something more than just the standard spinning of reels.

Where Does This Leave Canadian Brands?

The American presence on Alberta’s iGaming approved list is hard to ignore, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Canadian-rooted brands have secured their place in the market too — and in healthy numbers. BetMGM CA, Betty Gaming, Casino Time, Delta Casino, ScoreBet, River Cree iGaming, FanDuel Canada, Betnova, PointsBet CA, and Pure Casino Entertainment Partnership are among the homegrown and Canada-based operators that have earned their licences ahead of the July 13 launch. That’s a significant contingent — enough to suggest that Alberta’s market won’t simply be handed over to foreign operators without a fight.

And Canadian brands carry advantages that no amount of American marketing budget can easily replicate. They understand the local player, their cultural nuances, preferred payment methods, and the sporting loyalties that drive betting behavior in this part of the country. River Cree iGaming, for instance, brings with it the weight of an established Alberta brand with deep roots in the province’s gaming community. That kind of local credibility takes years to build and can’t be imported.

The question isn’t whether Canadian operators belong in this market — they clearly do. The question is whether they can hold their ground against deep-pocketed American giants that have spent years perfecting their acquisition strategies in some of the world’s most competitive iGaming environments. Only time will tell, and the clock starts July 13.
