Alberta will reportedly launch its regulated online casino and sports betting market on July 13, 2026. The news comes from Alberta’s Minister of Service and Red Tape Reduction, Dale Nally, via a letter to stakeholders that was viewed by Canadian Gaming Business.
Five operators — PointsBet, BetRivers, Caesars Online Casino, Horseshoe, and Caesars Sportsbook & Casino — are already open for pre-registration in the province. Like Ontario, there is no limit on the number of operators that are able to seek licensure. As such, Alberta is set to be a competitive market with major brands like DraftKings, FanDuel, bet365, and more expected to make a local push.
For sports bettors, the reported launch comes 59 days before the kickoff of the 2026 NFL season.
What July 13 Means for Gamblers in Alberta
The July 13 launch date marks a major shift for Alberta online casino players and sports bettors, as it signals the move from a limited, government-run online offering (via PlayAlberta) to a fully open, regulated market with multiple private sportsbook and casino operators.
For players, this means significantly more choice, including access to major global brands, a wider range of betting markets, and improved odds.
The news follows the AGLC’s move to institute July 13 as a deadline for licensing applications and registration fees from all grey-market sportsbook operators who wish to participate in the regulated market. By the same token, all futures bets placed with unregulated operators must be settled before the July 13 launch date.
It also brings a safer environment, with all operators required to meet provincial standards for consumer protection, responsible gambling, and data security. In practical terms, Alberta bettors who may have previously used offshore sites will now have legal, locally regulated alternatives, while casual players will benefit from a more modern, user-friendly online gaming experience similar to what’s already available in Ontario.
Alberta iGaming Market Could Exceed C$1 Billion Annually
Alberta’s regulated online sports betting and casino market is expected to generate billions in annual wagers (handle) and hundreds of millions in revenue (gross gaming revenue, or GGR) once fully established. For reference, online casinos in Ontario — which has roughly 3x the population of Alberta — generated $98.3 billion in wagers and $4 billion in GGR in 2025 alone.
Alberta online casino operators will face a 20% tax rate, with a separate 3% allocation for responsible gambling resources.
