Why Same-Game Parlays Will Take Over Alberta’s Sports Betting Market

Same-game parlays are expected to become one of the most popular betting options in Alberta’s sports betting market in 2026.

Same-game parlays are the talk of just about every town in jurisdictions with a regulated online sports betting market.

From Ontario to New York and Michigan to West Virginia, multi-leg wagers on single-game outcomes quickly became one of the most in-demand betting options, and have only grown in popularity as markets have matured.

If this pattern holds for the Alberta sports betting market, then same-game parlays will soon emerge as the dominant sportsbook product once the province opens its regulated iGaming market on July 13.

As the evidence suggests, such an outcome is all but a certainty.

What is a Same-Game Parlay?

A same-game parlay allows bettors to combine multiple outcomes from a single event into one wager.

For example, a bettor may back the Edmonton Oilers to win, Connor McDavid to record 1+ points, and the total goals in the game going over 6.5 – all in the same slip. For the wager to be successful, each individual leg of the bet must hit.

The addition of more legs will increase the total payout, but also reduce the likelihood of the wager being successful.

Unlike straight bets, SGPs encourage bettors to think more broadly about how events within a game could unfold, since individual legs may correlate with or oppose one another.

Why SGPs Appeal to Bettors

Once viewed as a novelty feature, same-game parlays have rapidly evolved into a significant source of engagement for both books and players.

The answer lies in the appeal, which is a higher risk paired with substantially higher potential payouts than single wagers.

That risk-reward structure is a legitimate draw, especially for casual bettors seeking a “lottery ticket” like entertainment experience, as SGPs can turn a small stake into a large payout, if the chips fall correctly.

Same-game parlays also thrive from a customization perspective. Bettors can essentially craft single wagers that reflect exactly what they’re looking for, whether it be team outcomes, individual player performances, game direction, or all of the above.

That interactivity directly ties into another angle: visibility. Same-game parlays are heavily marketed on game broadcasts, individual apps, and live betting prompts, making player exposure to this style of wager consistent and widespread.

Within all this, though, same-game parlays are best treated as sports betting’s version of a lottery ticket. They’re fun, but far from a guaranteed payout.

Assessing the SGP Blueprint in Ontario

While iGaming Ontario doesn’t track – or, at least, publicly report – sports betting revenue by bet type, it’s reasonable to assume same-game parlays counted toward a significant portion of the province’s $654 million in betting revenue in 2024-25.

Since the Ontario market launched in 2022, sportsbooks have invested heavily in growing same-game parlays as core products.

This is evident in the avalanche of sports betting advertisements in Ontario, which largely featured “build your bet” and SGP messaging, catering to both casual and experienced bettors.

Same-game parlays also align naturally with player props and in-game storylines in several of the major professional leagues, particularly the NBA, NFL, and NHL. According to iGO’s 2022-23 Q4 and Full Year Market Performance Report, basketball was the most popular sport to bet on, accounting for 29% of total wagers.

Football checked in third at 13% and hockey fourth at 9%. Soccer was runner-up at 15%.

These statistics from year one of Ontario’s online casino and sports betting market may just hint at where early sports betting interest among Albertans may go.

Why Alberta Bettors May Adopt SGPs Faster than Previous Markets

All that said, Alberta is entering the iGaming sphere at a much more advanced stage of sportsbook development.

Unlike earlier markets, which evolved alongside SGP betting, Alberta will welcome sportsbook operators with more refined SGP offerings.

Now, instead of moving hand-in-hand in the experimentation phase, Albertans will have access to the finished product, fully integrated with core SGP elements, potentially including:

  • Bet builders
  • Pre-built parlays
  • Live SGP options
  • Player prop markets
  • Odds boosts

In other words, SGPs will already be part of the default sportsbook experience in North America’s next major iGaming region.

Which Sports Will Drive Alberta SGP Betting?

Based on the data in Ontario, it’s fair to expect heavy SGP wagering activity on the NBA, NFL, and NHL among Albertans.

What’s important to remember, though, is that Alberta will launch after the NBA and NHL playoffs conclude, and about two months before the 2026-27 NFL season kicks off in early September.

While the NFL will play a significant role in driving SGP betting once the season begins, early market activity could revolve mainly around Major League Baseball, as it will be the only active “major four” league at launch.

With daily games, extensive props, and constant in-play betting opportunities, baseball will likely be a key early driver of SGP activity in Alberta.

The market is also conveniently set to open six days before the FIFA World Cup final, which is set for July 19. Both semi-finals (July 14 and 15), as well as the third-place match (July 18), will also be in play.

As seen in Ontario, soccer has proven an extremely popular betting market – and what better introduction for Albertans than the pinnacle of international competition.

Heavy Dose of SGPs in Alberta’s Betting Forecast

As the sports calendar turns and Alberta’s market progresses, a more accurate picture of the province’s betting preferences will emerge – especially during the first full NHL and NBA seasons of the regulated era.

Before then, one thing is already clear: same-game parlays will stand front and centre, no matter the sport.
