Getting to know Joe Boozell

I’m the Content Lead at Bonus.com, which means I spend a lot of time obsessing over our biggest pages and figuring out how to make them genuinely more useful for readers. I started covering the online gambling industry in 2020 as the Lead Writer for PlayIllinois, right as the state exploded into one of the top sports betting markets in the country. From there, I led content strategy for PlayPennsylvania, PlayMichigan and PlayCanada, focusing on evergreen online casino content that actually helps people make smarter decisions.

Before iGaming, I spent five years at Turner Sports writing and editing for NCAA.com, NBA.com and PGA.com. I also co-wrote a novel, Misfire, about an overmatched Chicago Bulls GM who secretly partners with a near-futuristic AI to save his job and his sanity. I graduated from Butler University in 2015 and live in Chicago with my wife, our daughter, two dogs, and enough plants to occasionally win Zoom compliments.

Q&A With Joe Boozell

I jumped into the industry in 2020 as the Lead Writer for PlayIllinois, right as the state’s sports betting market was taking off. Covering launches, promos and regulatory updates in real time was like drinking from a firehose, but it hooked me fast. I realized there was real value in breaking down complicated bonus terms into plain English.

Give me a clean deposit match with reasonable playthrough and clear terms. I’m less interested in the flashy headline percentage and more interested in what’s realistically withdrawable. If a bonus feels beatable and transparent, I’m in.

I look at it like a bettor first, editor second. I test the sign-up flow, read the full terms, evaluate the promo value, and ask: would I actually use this? If the answer isn’t yes, readers deserve to know why.

I like turning complexity into clarity. Bonuses, legislation and promo mechanics can get confusing fast. If I can help someone make a smarter decision in five minutes instead of learning the hard way, that’s a win.

That public betting percentages are meaningful on their own. “Fade the public” sounds sharp, but it’s mostly noise. Percent splits don’t tell you who’s betting, how much they’re betting, or where the sharp money actually is. If you’re making decisions purely because 70% of tickets are on one side, you’re probably reacting to incomplete information.
