There are now three options to buy lottery tickets online in Massachusetts as Lotto.com announced its launch on October 3. Players can use Lotto.com’s app to order tickets for draw games and play digital scratch-offs. Massachusetts is the 11th state for Lotto.com.
Lottery couriers like Lotto.com allow users to purchase lottery tickets online. Once the player places an order, the courier purchases the physical ticket, stores it securely, and sends confirmation to the player. Prizes under $600 can be claimed by the courier and credited directly to the player’s account. For larger prizes, Lotto.com arranges delivery of the physical ticket to the player, who can redeem it in person. Lotto.com offers four draw games in Massachusetts:
- Powerball
- Mega Millions
- Lucky for Life
- Mass Cash
Those who prefer scratch-offs can choose from three “Digital Scratch” games, including $10,000,000 Cash Blast, Bonus 100x, and Lifetime Millions. Lotto.com’s digital scratch games differ from the “e-Instants” offered directly by some states that have an online lottery. The results for Digital Scratch games are determined by the corresponding physical tickets, so after placing an order, Lotto.com players have to wait for the ticket to be purchased before they can reveal their results digitally.
Massachusetts presents a tremendous opportunity for Lotto.com and other couriers, as it ranks first in lottery sales per capita in the US. In a press release, Thomas Metzger, Lotto.com CEO said:
We are thrilled to launch in Massachusetts, the best performing lottery per capita in the country. We also look forward to bringing incremental funding to the communities across the Commonwealth that the Lottery supports.
In addition to Massachusetts, Lotto.com is available in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas.
Intense Competition in the US Lottery Courier Market
Lotto.com is not the only company offering lottery courier services in the Bay State. The market leader, Jackpocket, launched in Massachusetts in July 2023, followed by Jackpot.com in January 2024. The Jackpocket app is available in 17 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico, while Jackpot.com is available in six states.
However, although Jackpocket is available in more markets than most of its competitors, it doesn’t offer digital scratch-off tickets, while Jackpot.com and Lotto.com do. Jackpocket has no instant ticket option at all in Massachusetts, while in some jurisdictions, it will purchase scratch-off tickets for delivery to the end customer, but won’t provide them with results over the internet.
Although all these companies operate under similar business models, there are some other subtle differences, such as in ticket handling. According to a Colorado Lottery performance audit, Jackpocket provides proof of purchase to the user with a scanned image of the ticket. Conversely, Lotto.com provides a digital receipt and confirmation of the player’s numbers but doesn’t scan the ticket.
