LeBron James has not announced where he will play next season, but that has not stopped prediction market traders from trying to beat everyone else to the answer.
Kalshi’s market on LeBron’s next team has now attracted about $200 million in trading volume, making it one of the biggest sports prediction markets the platform has ever seen.
And what gave icing to the cake was the official Miami Heat YouTube channel accidentally uploading a private video publicly for a few short minutes. The title promised a LeBron James introductory press conference scheduled for July 27. The description even welcomed the superstar back to South Beach as a member of the team.
The video was taken down almost immediately, but internet sleuths were way too fast. Screenshots flooded social media, and the entire basketball community lost its mind.
Kalshi Traders Turn a Social Media Mistake Into Cash
While fans were arguing online, traders on the prediction market app Kalshi were busy moving millions of dollars. The market asking where LeBron James will play next season has now generated almost 200 million dollars in total trades.
Before the video appeared, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat were running neck and neck. Both teams sat close to a thirty-eight percent chance on the platform. The moment the video leaked, Miami got past fifty percent on Kalshi, making them the favorite.
Meanwhile, odds for other potential destinations collapsed.
- Miami Heat: Jumped from 39% up to 48%
- Cleveland Cavaliers: Dropped from 38% down to 27%
- Golden State Warriors: Slide from 15% up to 17%
- Philadelphia 76ers: Sitting at just 10%
Prediction markets were not the only platforms that had a chaotic turn. Sports betting apps felt the shockwave right away too.
When that Heat link went live, DraftKings slashed their odds on Miami, turning the Heat into favorites.
Here is how the DraftKings Sportsbook board shifted after the leak:
- Miami Heat: Slashed from minus 120 all the way down to minus 200
- Cleveland Cavaliers: Dropped to plus 225.
- Golden State Warriors: Slid to plus 450.
- Philadelphia 76ers: Trailed further back at plus 700.
Was It a Real Leak Or Just Overeager Marketing?
The Miami Heat quickly tried to clear the air. A team spokesperson explained that their social media department was simply preparing graphics and video templates for multiple possible scenarios. They insisted that the upload was an innocent mistake and carried zero official confirmation that a deal was done.
Despite that explanation, plenty of fans remain skeptical. LeBron spent four seasons in Miami, winning two championship rings alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. With Miami recently landing big man Giannis Antetokounmpo, the idea of LeBron joining forces with him in South Beach does not sound crazy at all.
LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, made it clear on a recent podcast that his client will not be rushed. He stated that no one outside of LeBron’s inner circle knows the final choice, and the decision could come tomorrow or take another week.
LeBron’s Timeline Is Becoming a Market of Its Own
Traders are not only trying to predict “where” LeBron will play next. They are also betting on “when” the announcement will happen.
On Kalshi, the market gives a 41% chance that LeBron will reveal his next team before July 28, rising to 46% before July 29 and 58% before July 30.
Other related markets are also attracting attention, including who will break the news first, the total value of LeBron’s next contract, and whether his next destination will be in the Eastern or Western Conference. Together, the markets show just how much interest surrounds every twist in LeBron’s free agency.
