No Clear Winner in Fox-Flutter Arbitration Decision, But Fox Bet Might Be the Loser
Arbitration has concluded for Fox Corporation and Flutter Entertainment, on two out of three issues, anyway. One aspect of that decision could mean the future disappearance of yet another US online gambling brand. Fox initiated arbitration in April 2021 because of a difference in how the two companies interpreted a contractual clause. Flutter believed it had granted Fox the option […]
Powerball Draw Delayed as Massive Ticket Sales Cause Logistical Disruption
The awkwardly long drumroll is a classic stage gag. The spotlight goes on, the drumroll begins, and the moment the audience has been waiting for… doesn’t happen. That’s essentially what happened – or rather, didn’t happen – with last night’s record-setting Powerball jackpot draw. Powerball draws normally take place Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11 p.m. […]
‘I Should Have Won By Now!’ – The Mathematics of Losing Streaks
A roulette player is down to his last few chips. He’s missed his lucky number at least 36 times in a row. Surely Lady Luck owes him one by now. All those chips go on 17. Yet the ball lands on 35, for the third time in the last ten spins. Now broke, the player […]
North Dakota Tribes Can Offer Online Gambling – But Only On Their Land
Unsurprisingly, North Dakota will not attempt to offer online sports betting and casinos statewide through a tribal compact. That was what the tribes in the state had proposed. However, there were several good reasons to doubt Governor Doug Burgum would agree. For one thing, it’s a conservative state, and last year’s online poker bill received a very […]
Illinois Reopens Bidding for Online-Only Sports Betting Licenses, But Who Wants One?
Anyone who wants to offer online sports betting in Illinois without a land-based presence can once again apply for a license. All it will cost is $20 million up front. However, the reason that’s possible is that the state got no takers the first time around. At least, none who saw the process through. The state’s Sports Wagering […]
Kindred Wants Unibet to be a ‘Top Ten’ US Operator – What Does That Look Like?
Kindred Group’s flagship brand Unibet is a big deal in Europe. In the US, not so much. Unibet Casino is available in New Jersey and Pennsylvania but doesn’t hold much market share in either. Until this week, the sportsbook alone was available in a further four states. However, it announced Thursday that it would shut down operations in Iowa. (Internationally, Unibet also […]
AOC Supposedly Among Voices of Support for Prediction Markets as CFTC Mulls Kalshi’s Request
The Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has an important decision ahead of it. Kalshi, an online predictions market, has requested the right to offer contracts on the outcome of the upcoming midterms. It will receive its answer tomorrow, October 28. Complicating matters for the CFTC is that it has just asked PredictIt, which has been offering a […]
Powerball Jackpot May Hit $1 Billion Next Week, if No One Wins it First
The Powerball jackpot for Wednesday, Oct 26 would have been for an estimated $700 million. No one held the winning ticket and the next draw, on Saturday, Oct 29, will be for $800 million. Even if someone holds the winning numbers this time, it will be in the top five all-time US lottery jackpots. However, if no […]
Pennsylvania Will Set an All-Time Record for Self-Exclusions and Hotline Calls in 2022
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) released its 2021-2022 Annual Report earlier this month. Most key numbers for the state’s gambling industry have gone up year over year, including many all-time highs. State tax alone (not counting local grants, etc.) amounted to $1.43 billion from gambling in the 2021-2022 fiscal year, up 29% from $1.11 billion in 2020-2021. […]
Fall Brings the Expected Boost to Online Gambling Revenue, but Less Than Last Year
There has been a consistent theme to 2022 online gambling revenue updates. While US markets continue to grow, that growth is now slower than it has been in recent years. September gross gaming revenue (GGR) figures for the three major online gambling states – NJ, PA and MI – highlight this trend. In 2021, their […]
