Congressman Marlin Stutzman has strongly voiced his opposition to a proposed casino in Northeast Indiana. According to the Congressman, the social costs of expanded gambling in Indiana outweigh the proposed casino’s potential economic benefits.
Stutzman noted that the casino would make gambling more accessible to residents of Fort Wayne and the surrounding communities, saying, “You’re going to actually hurt people.” The Congressman’s main fear is that easy access to gambling could lead to a rise in gambling addiction.
Concerns over gambling addiction
Congressman Stutzman notes that Indiana is already one of the largest gaming states in the country. Moreover, he describes gambling as an unhealthy habit, associating casinos with “moral decay” and highlighting the increased crime rates reported around casinos. The lawmakers also warned that increased cases of gambling addiction would lead to increased demand for public services.
To this end, he says that communities should consider the potential consequences of making gambling even more accessible—especially as discussions around expanding commercial gaming into real-money online casinos continue to draw debate nationwide. Interestingly, Stutzman previously served in the Indiana General Assembly and was involved in the establishment of gaming policy during his time in the legislature.
The Congressman highlighted the history of riverboat casinos in Northwest Indiana, using it as an example of what could happen if gaming was approved. He noted that while casinos started on the water, they eventually expanded onto the land and now operate 24/7. “If people vote yes to allow for a casino to be built in any of those three counties, it’s going to look different. It’s going to affect our community,” he said.
Protecting Northeast Indiana
Congressman Stutzman believes that Northeast Indiana has something that is worth protecting. Specifically, he noted the region’s manufacturing, agriculture, education, and healthcare sectors, not forgetting the residents’ family values. Ultimately, he argued that anyone considering whether to live in Fort Wayne would be more interested in amenities like schools, hospitals, and jobs rather than the availability of gaming facilities or future digital options like Indiana online casinos.
As such, the lawmaker said that the culture associated with gambling doesn’t fit in with what he believes makes Northeast Indiana unique. Moreover, he dismissed claims that the casino would boost the local economy through investments, jobs, and tax revenue.
Stutzman argues that instead of relying on tax revenue from casino gaming for economic development, Northeast Indiana should focus on building its existing industries, which are already experiencing growth. “We should focus on the good things that we have here,” he said.
The lawmaker especially focused on the region’s economic sector. He noted that the region has lots of potential for economic development in this sector despite the challenges brought about by trade negotiations and tariffs. Overall, he argued that the region doesn’t need a casino to continue attracting better-paying jobs.
