The North Carolina Lottery entered a new era last week, unveiling scratch-off games that include University of North Carolina and North Carolina State branding. It’s the first time that the lottery has offered products branded with university imagery.
The scratch-offs, TAR HEELS and NC STATE, offer up to $200,000 in top prizes and retail at $5 apiece. Between the two games, the total up for grabs is over $20 million.
Each game also offers access to VIP experiences for their respective team.
Aiming to capitalize on the white-hot rivalry between the two in-state universities, Randy Spielman, Chief Product Officer of the N.C. Education Lottery, expressed excitement about the launch:
“We are excited about the potential of these games knowing that North Carolinians are extremely passionate about the UNC and NC State Rivalry. We can’t wait to see all the Tar Heel and Wolfpack faithful show off their school pride by trying their luck on these exciting new scratch-offs.”
There are three design variants of each school’s ticket, adding a souvenir element to the lottery‘s offerings.
Overall odds of netting a prize for each game are 1 in 4.16, with a 1 in 1.44 million chance to take home the $200,000 top prize. So far, ticket purchases reflect that 55% of sales have gone to the TAR HEELS ticket, while the NC STATE ticket sits at 45%.
