Police Investigate $27,000 Lottery Ticket Theft at Fort Littleton Gas Station

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a reported theft of approximately $27,000 worth of lottery tickets from a gas station in Fort Littleton.

According to a public information release, the alleged theft occurred at the Martin Pit Stop, located in Fulton County’s Dublin Township. Details surrounding the incident remain scarce, with police not disclosing the type or monetary value of the scratch-off tickets stolen, or if any suspects have been identified.

The Pennsylvania Lottery’s Role in Security

The Pennsylvania Lottery has a system in place to deactivate stolen tickets, making it difficult for thieves to cash in on their crimes. When a retailer reports a theft, the lottery can use the unique identifiers on the tickets to flag them as invalid. This means that if someone attempts to redeem a stolen ticket, the lottery terminal will alert the retailer that the prize is not valid. Gary Miller, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Lottery, confirmed this, saying:

“Retailers carefully control ticket inventories. When tickets are reported stolen, the lottery takes immediate steps to prevent them from being cashed. We also provide law enforcement with additional information to assist in their investigations.”

The system provides a crucial layer of security, safeguarding lottery funds and preventing the illegal redemption of stolen tickets. The lottery’s security division is actively involved in the cases, assisting local law enforcement with the investigation.

“It’s never a good idea to try to steal lottery tickets,” said Miller. “You will get caught and you will be prosecuted.”

The Fort Littleton heist follows a June theft in which a West Newton woman was accused of stealing $82,000 worth of lottery tickets from a gas station where she worked as a manager. An audit uncovered the missing tickets, and video surveillance allegedly showed her taking them.

Penalties for Lottery Ticket Theft

Stealing lottery tickets in Pennsylvania is considered a third-degree felony if the value is between $2,000 and $100,000, which could lead to up to seven years in prison and significant fines. The Pennsylvania Lottery is that it’s the only state lottery in the U.S. that designates all of its proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. Since its inception in 1972, the Lottery has contributed $36.2 billion to a number of local services, including prescription services, rent rebates, and more.
