How NFL Regular Season Odds Are Calculated

The most popular ways to bet on the NFL include moneyline, point spread, and totals betting. Online sportsbooks offer several other ways to bet on NFL games, but it’s important to understand the way fundamental football betting works.

For example, here’s a look at the odds on a Week 2 matchup between the Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021 NFL regular season. The lines on that game from FanDuel Sportsbook looked like this leading up to kickoff:

 Point SpreadMoneylineTotals
Las Vegas Raiders+6.5 (-115)+205o49 (-105)
Pittsburgh Steelers-6.5 (-104)-244u49 (-115)

Below, we’ll go over what each bet means as well as other popular NFL bets that go beyond these standard three options.

NFL Points Spread

The point spread listed for an NFL game adds points to the underdog’s final score, or subtracts from the favorite’s final point total. For this reason, it’s known as a “handicap” in the UK and elsewhere overseas.

Basically, the favorite team has minus points and the underdog has plus points. For a bet on the favorite to win, they must win by more than the minus points. In the example above, the spread is +/- 6.5 points. As the favorite, the Steelers would need to win by at least seven points. As the underdog, the Raiders would need to either win by any amount or lose by six points or fewer.

The odds, or the potential payout, are the numbers in parentheses above. The standard NFL points spread odds is -110, but it can range from +100 to -130.

NFL Moneyline

Moneyline bets represent a straight-up wager on what team will win the game, with no point spread involved. Winning bets on the underdog pay off at better odds than the favorite, and a big NFL upset can lead to a big payout on the underdog.

Usually, betting the points spread means bigger payouts on the favorite but a better chance of winning on the underdog. A moneyline bet means bigger payouts on the underdog but a better chance of winning on the favorite.

NFL Totals

The total is the number of points scored in a game between the two teams. Totals bets simply task the bettor with picking whether the final score will end up under or over the listed point total. In the Raiders vs. Steelers example, the points total at FanDuel was 49 points. The over would be 50 points or more and the under would be 48 points or fewer.

If the points total is the exact number, that’s a push, which means the bettor gets their wager back and no wins are paid out. So if you had bet the over and the game ended with 49 points total, your bet would be refunded.

NFL Prop Bets

An NFL prop bet is a wager on an in-game result, such as number of touchdown throws made by a quarterback or the winner of a specific quarter or half. Sportsbooks can offer a huge variety of prop bets, and bettors can also request an NFL prop bet that they’d like to see. The sportsbook will either deny the request or offer odds on the line.

NFL Live Betting

Live betting on the NFL is when you bet after the game begins. The odds can change dramatically as the game progresses, and bettors can win and lose multiple times between the opening whistle and final whistle. Live betting options include moneyline, points spread, totals, and prop bets, so the possibilities are truly endless.

NFL Parlays

An NFL parlay is a combination of bets that all have to win for the bettor to receive a payout. For example, you can bet on all NFL Sunday games and combine them into a single parlay to maximize the win potential. If all the bets win, you’ll receive a lot more money than if you had bet on each game individually. However, if even just one bet loses, the entire wager is lost.

At most online sportsbooks, you can combine all types of NFL bets into a single parlay. For example, you can parlay a prop bet, moneyline, and point spread bet into a single parlay. Some sportsbooks also let you do single-game parlays rather than multi-game parlays.

Calculating American Odds

Note that all of the lines on the NFL betting odds calculate offer payout odds listed in American Odds. The -110 seen on both sides of most points spread and totals line represents a bet that pays -110 American Odds. That number represents how much you need to wager ($110) to win $100, but you can bet any amount.

Thankfully, you can simply type in your wager at the sportsbook before locking in your bet to see the win potential. You can also type in the size of the payout you want, and the size of the bet will be automatically calculated.

But to manually calculate “-“ American Odds, divide 100 by the odds number (without the minus sign) and multiply that quotient by the amount wagered.

For example, a $50 bet that pays -110 odds would calculate as (100/110)*$50, which converts to (.909*$50) and then to $45.45. A $50 winning bet on -110 odds would return $95.45 total to the bettor ($45.45 profit plus the original $50 bet).

Calculating “+” odds, like the +106 payout on the Bills moneyline bet, involves a slightly different formula. “+” payouts are calculated by dividing the odds number by 100, then multiplying by the amount wagered to determine the profit.

A $50 bet on the +106 line for Buffalo would solve as (110/100)*$50, which calculates to (1.10*$50) and then to $55. Basically, you’re moving the decimal point over two places (110 becomes 1.10).

A $50 winning wager at +106 odds would return $105 total to the bettor ($55 profit plus the original $50 bet).

What Causes Point Spread And Moneyline Odds To Change During The Week?

Suppose the Raiders-Steelers game showed the Steelers as a -4 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook a week before the game, but by game day the line showed the -6.5 point spread listed above.

The lines on an NFL game can change as the week goes on, sometimes shifting dramatically. Changes can occur right up until kickoff.

If a sportsbook gets too many bets on one side of a line, the book stands to lose big if that side wins. To combat this, sportsbooks will shift the point spread and moneyline odds in an effort to get the right amount of money (from the sportsbook’s money-making perspective) on each side of the game.
