    Retail Sports Betting In Ohio

Ohioans will have many options on where to place their wagers once sports betting is live. Up to 25 licenses can be awarded to casinos/racinos and sports teams, and each licensee can pair with two operators (e.g. DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, etc.). Therefore, up to 50 sportsbooks could be operating in Ohio when sports betting goes live.

The law also allows bars, restaurants, and stores to offer sports betting kiosks, which is not possible in every state where sports betting is legal. Therefore, the Buckeye State appears poised to be a preeminent destination for sports betting enthusiasts.

Types Of Online Sportsbook Bonuses Available In Ohio

While the full list of online sportsbooks to launch in Ohio on New Year’s Day is still being finalized, new users will see many Ohio sports betting promos put out over the next month.

Understanding the variety across the industry will help determine which ones you’ll take advantage of. These Ohio sportsbook bonuses are common and popular for several key reasons. We will break down all these reasons and how to best take advantage of the offers below.

      No Deposit Bonuses

No deposit bonuses in Ohio will likely follow the model used by DraftKings. Also called bet credit(s), no deposit bonuses don’t require any investment from a player and simply reward them for making a new account. Then the player can use the no-deposit credit to make some initial wagers without having to put any money down first. Thus, these bonuses are great for trying out a new app if you aren’t sure if you’ll like it in the long term.

      First Bet Bonus

A first bet bonus is exactly what it says: a guarantee that your first bet can’t lose.  This does not mean that you will get your money back for sure, however.

Here’s how it works: You make your first bet on the platform.  If you win, fantastic; collect your winnings!

If you lose your first bet, you receive your wager back in the form of bonus bets. So, you have to bet again rather than simply withdraw the wager. However, you do get two chances at your first win!

      Deposit Match Bonuses

Deposit match bonuses are also popular, as they can increase or even double your wagering cash based on the size of your first deposit. For their bonus that is offered after the official launch date, DraftKings provides a good example, with a deposit bonus worth up to $1,000.

Say that you deposit $500. In that case, DraftKings will give you $100 of site credit to add to your initial betting total (credited in $1 increments for every $25 wagered). This is a great way to maximize your betting cash right off the bat, particularly if you’re a long-term bettor.

However, these bonuses usually come with certain terms and conditions. In the above case, you have to wager any credit you get from DraftKings 5 times in total (known as a playthrough requirement) before you can withdraw any associated winnings.

      Risk-Free Bets

The OCCC published a FAQ page in relation to marketing and promotions regulations for Ohio sports betting. The use of “risk-free” language is prohibited under the OCCC’s interpretation of the law. This is different than regulations in other sports betting markets.

Any promotions or bonuses that require users to use their own money in an initial bet or deposit puts the user at risk of losing their money and can not legally state it is “risk-free.” For example, FanDuel changed their new user’s risk-free bonus to a “no sweat first bet” promotion for Ohio.

However, some sportsbooks will do a “wager match,” which credits your account with a bet equal to your first wager whether it wins or loses. That’s relatively rare, but not as rare as a no-deposit bonus.

Ohio Sports Betting Market Access Deals And Partnerships

Sportsbooks have been planning on the launch of sports betting in the new midwest market for some time now. With Ohio becoming a legal sports betting state, many Ohio sportsbooks have solidified partnerships with professional sports teams, casinos and other potential retail sportsbook locations.

Rush Street Interactive, which owns the online sportsbooks BetRivers and SugarHouse, penned a strategic market access partnership with Penn National Gaming, which owns Barstool Sportsbook and operates four Ohio casinos. That means BetRivers or SugarHouse (or both) will launch as online sportsbooks in the state, and it could also mean a retail Rivers Sportsbook at a Penn National property.

Unibet, owned by Kindred Group, also reportedly gained market access through Hollywood Casino, which is operated by Penn National Gaming. Why is Penn giving so many competitors market access? Jon Kaplowitz, Penn National’s Senior Vice President of Interactive Gaming, said that the company is happy to provide access “in exchange for a combination of upfront cash and equity, one-time market access fees and ongoing revenue sharing.”

MaximBet, which is currently only available in Colorado, announced that it secured Ohio market access, as the second Mobile Management Services Provider for JACK Cleveland Casino. The same is true for WynnBET, which also announced market access to Ohio and is listed as the Mobile Management Services Provider for JACK Thistledown Racino.

      Ohio Sports Team Betting Partners

Several major Ohio teams including the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns have partnerships with some of the top sportsbooks.

      • Cincinnati Reds ⚾️ –  BetMGM
      • Cincinnati Bengals 🏈 –  Betfred
      • Cleveland Browns 🏈 – Bally Bet
      • Cleveland Guardians ⚾️ – bet365
      • Columbus Blue Jackets 🏒- Fanatics
      • Columbus Crew ⚽️ – Tipico
      • FC Cincinnati ⚽️- SuperBook
      • Cleveland Cavaliers 🏀- Caesars

For many of these operators, this will not be their first partnership with a professional sports team. BetMGM is known for partnering with other MLB teams around the league and opening retail sportsbooks in the ballparks. Caesars also has a few different retail sportsbooks that have opened in professional sports arenas around the country.

While it will not be the first rodeo for a lot of these sportsbooks, it will still be an exciting time for Ohio sports fans to find sports betting not only accessible through their phones, but while supporting their favorite sports teams.

Can I Bet On College Sports In Ohio?

Yes. Despite objections from several individuals within higher education, collegiate betting will be allowed in Ohio’s sportsbooks. However, Matt Schuler, executive director of the Ohio Casino Control Commission, has said that the commission could change these rules if needed “for the purpose of integrity and managing risk.”

As of right now, betting on college sports is expected in Ohio, with no restrictions.

What International Sports Can You Bet On In Ohio?

Ohio sportsbooks will have a large number of international events for users to bet on between rugby, Australian rules football, cricket, the World Cup and other international tournaments. Can You Bet On Esports In Ohio?

Esports wagering will be possible at FanDuel, DraftKings, and similar sportsbooks should they receive licensure from the Ohio government. However, these betting markets will likely not be as developed as the markets for other sports.

Do Sportsbooks In Ohio Limit How Much I Can Bet?

Not at this time, and there’s no sign that any future retail or online sportsbook in Ohio will limit your wagering potential. It’ll all depend on the betting lines available and any rules that your chosen sportsbook decides to enforce.

        Responsible Gambling Measures in Ohio

Ohio for Responsible Gambling is an initiative aimed at promoting responsible gambling in Ohio, for those who gamble.

Four state agencies in Ohio are working together in this effort: The Ohio Lottery Commission, the Ohio Casino Control Commission, the Ohio State Racing Commission, and the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS). OhioMHAS serves as the resource partner for the initiative and the lead agency responsible for prevention and treatment of problem gambling.

Amanda Blackford, Director of Operations and Problem Gambling Services, Ohio Casino Control Commission, said the campaign focuses on responsible play and the nuances of sports betting that can pose problems for some gamblers.

In other states that preceded Ohio in legalizing sports betting, we’ve seen higher interest and more struggles with problem gambling,” Blackford said. “We want people to have fun and be responsible.”

The responsible gambling tips set forth by the initiative include:

        • Set limits on time and money.
        • Know risks before you bet.
        • Keep gambling a social activity.
        • Never borrow to play.
        • Don’t chase your losses.
        • Bet only what you can afford to lose.
        • Gamble with money set aside for entertainment.
        • Never gamble when depressed or under stress.
        • Avoid mixing gambling with alcohol or other substances.

How To Create An Online Sportsbook Account In Ohio

Creating an Ohio sports betting account is an easy process. First, choose from one of the Ohio sportsbook bonuses above. Once you follow the signup link, you will need to provide the following information in order to register:

        • Ohio’s state government will probably not require in-person registration to create a sportsbook account
        • Gather some pieces of personal information like your Social Security number and date of birth
        • Your sportsbook operator’s customer service team will review your information to confirm your identity
        • Once they have done so, you’ll be able to claim your bonus, fund your account and start betting

Legal Online Sportsbooks Versus Offshore Sportsbooks In Ohio

Illegal or offshore sportsbooks are never a good idea, especially since online sportsbooks are now legal in Ohio.

Illegal sportsbooks usually don’t have great odds to begin with, so any betting lines you find will not offer great opportunities for profit. Even worse, most offshore sportsbooks don’t have good digital security, like SSL certification.

As a result, any personal information you provide, or any funds you give an offshore site, are potentially vulnerable to hackers or other digital criminals. Furthermore, if an offshore sportsbook itself decides to scam you, there’s little you can do.

Illegal betting sites aren’t based in the US and are not under the jurisdiction of any state or federal government. Therefore, your bankroll could be totally drained and you would have no real means of legal recourse.

In the end, it’s a better idea to simply use a legal sportsbook than to test your luck with an offshore or illegal betting site.
