History of Gambling in Washington

The history of gambling in Washington began with legal horse racing betting in 1933. Later, in 1972, Washington voters voted to allow gambling activities, which launched in 1973. This ballot measure led to the creation of a gambling commission and allowed pull tabs, bingo, raffles, and fundraisers. Card rooms were approved shortly after in 1974. Casino gambling truly began in the state in 1988 when Congress authorized tribal casinos. However, tribes were unable to operate slot machines until 1999.
