Maryland Sports Betting Bonuses

Maryland sports betting is live!

After a long delay, the sports betting industry has made its way to Maryland. Maryland sports betting saw approval last year, and the first legal bets were placed at multiple retail casinos last winter. The industry continues to expand throughout the state, and Maryland online gambling is gearing up to launch as well. At full maturity, the Maryland sports betting market could consist of up to 47 retail locations and 60 different online sports betting apps. That gives bettors plenty of options to consider when placing their bets, which is always a good thing.

Online sports betting is not available in Maryland at this time. The original hope was that mobile betting apps could launch in the second half of 2022, but the process is moving a bit slower than expected. No official launch date has been announced at this time. But don’t worry — Maryland sports fans can still place bets in the state, they just have to do it in person.

As the wait for Maryland online gambling continues, the focus is on retail betting. As of August, sports bets can be placed at five in-person casinos and one non-casino site. Bingo World in Baltimore became the latest retail location to begin accepting sports wagers after partnering with BetRivers earlier this year. The table below shows a running list of all retail Maryland sportsbooks as of August 2022:

Latest Updates On Maryland Sports Betting: August 2022

After Maryland sports betting was approved in a referendum, the state has now joined the rapidly expanding US legal market. Governor Larry Hogan signed off on HB 940 to officially legalize the activity in Maryland, and the state legislature passed a comprehensive sports betting bill last spring.

The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) is responsible for awarding sports operators licenses within the state. Applications from sports betting platforms are further reviewed and investigated by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA). Establishments not named in the Sports Wagering Law could wait for a later launch in 2022. In total, there will be up to 110 licenses up for grabs. Maryland residents could see up to 47 retail sportsbook licenses at bars and restaurants and smaller off-track betting venues, and up to a whopping 60 mobile sports betting licenses. This makes it one of the most robust markets in the country. Retail betting sites could also be made available at professional sports stadium in Maryland including FedEx Field, M&T Bank Stadium, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Minority-owned businesses will also be involved in the industry as part of the launch.

The Old Line State will likely draw some of the industry’s biggest brands to the state. FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars Sportsbook all have retail partnerships with Maryland casinos, and there are many more partnerships in place. BetMGM and Caesars have partnered with the Baltimore Ravens, and PointsBet has partnered with Riverboat on the Potomac as well as University of Maryland athletics.

Sports Betting Bonuses In Maryland – What To Expect

Each sportsbook app that becomes available in Maryland will offer different bonuses to new players. Some sportsbooks offer risk-free bets, while other offer deposit bonuses. Other types of bonuses include first bet insurance, odds boosts, and rewards programs. Each user can claim only one bonus per sportsbook. We recommend downloading multiple Maryland sportsbook apps in order to take advantage of several great offers. Terms and conditions apply.

Risk-Free Bets

A risk-free bet offer is usually reserved for new members of an online sportsbook. If your first bet wins, you receive winnings and your wager back. If your first bet loses, you get either multiple free bets, a single free bets, or betting credits equal to the lost wager. Risk-free first bets are common bonuses on DraftKings, BetMGM, and PointsBet.

FanDuel’s “No Sweat First Bet” is really just different terminology to say a risk-free bet.

Be sure to read the terms and conditions with each risk-free bet offer before opting in.

Deposit Bonus

A deposit bonus is where the sports betting app matches your deposit by a certain percentage up to a maximum amount.

For example, the BetRivers Maryland bonus offer features a 100% match up to $250, which essentially doubles your first deposit. Conversely, the DraftKings Maryland welcome bonus features a 20% deposit match up to $1,000, which gets you $1 in bonus money for every $25 you wager.

With deposit bonuses, it’s important to note the playthrough requirements of each offer, as each platform is different. Playthrough requirements refer to how many times you have to bet the bonus amount before you can cash out associated winnings. For example, BetRivers has a 1x playthrough in comparison to DK’s 25x playthrough.

Insurance Offers

An insurance offer is a common ongoing promotion at online sportsbooks. It usually has to do with receiving all or part of a wager back depending on how things pan out. Here are some examples:

  • Parlay Insurance: If one leg loses a four-leg parlay, you get your bet back up to $25.
  • In-Game Event Insurance: If your team loses but a certain player scores, you get your bet back up to $20.

Keep in mind that insurance offers generally have an odds requirements that must be met in order to qualify.

Odds Boosts

Some of the most exciting sportsbook bonuses involve odds boosts. The biggest and best sportsbook apps in Maryland will likely offer tons of odds boosts once they are live. Odds boosts are exactly what they sounds like: the profit margin on a bet is boosted by a certain amount. For example, BetMGM Parlay Plus increases the profit on a seven-leg parlay by 40%. DraftKings offers regular odds boosts that can be found on the home screen of the mobile app. During the Major League Baseball season, a popular DraftKings odds boost involves users getting a 20% profit boost on any MLB same game parlay.

Refer A Friend

Most online sportsbooks will reward you for bringing friends onto the app. The terms of refer-a-friend programs vary wildly by each platform, but most give you some incentive for sharing your unique join link with other bettors. At DraftKings, you can refer-a-friend using your unique promo code, and then both you and your friend you recruited to the app will receive $100 in free bets. As always, be sure to read the terms and conditions.

Downloading Maryland Online Sports Betting Apps

Legal online sportsbooks generally offer access to players via mobile app or directly through a desktop browser. Mobile app downloads offer the highest degree of freedom, as Maryland’s upcoming online sportsbooks will allow players to wager from anywhere within state borders.

The desktop versions of Maryland’s online sportsbooks offer the simplicity of just visiting a sportsbook website and wagering directly from there, however.

Maryland Sportsbook Apps For Apple iOS Devices

Downloading mobile sportsbook apps is a quick and easy process that requires just a few simple steps. Legal mobile sportsbooks virtually always offer their apps as a free download, and mobile sports betting apps download to your mobile device in seconds in most cases.

You can download sportsbook apps by using our affiliate links on our sportsbook review pages. These links take you right through the process of getting the right app on your device. From there you can check out any new player promotions and sign up for a new account.

The mobile app version of an online sportsbook generally offers all of the same deposit and withdrawal options as its desktop counterpart. The companies behind these apps optimize the experience for your mobile device, putting the full-service sportsbook experience in the palm of your hand.

Maryland Sportsbook Apps For Android Devices

Most legal online sportsbooks make sure to develop a mobile app for both iOS and Android devices. These are found in their respective marketplaces to download for free (App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android).

The functionality of a mobile sports betting app is the same for both Apple and Android users. People log into their accounts after opening the app and navigate through to select and place their bets. There may also be various login options available, including utilizing biometrics or a pin to bypass a typical password. Some additional login and deposit/withdrawal restrictions may be implemented based on the state.

Maryland Sportsbook Apps For Desktop

Most major desktop browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, allow access to online sportsbooks. A download for determining location is generally required, and some sportsbooks may require their own services. This is a quick process that won’t harm devices and is only used to determine if the bettor is located in a legally approved area.

Similar to the mobile apps, the desktop version of an online sportsbook uses geolocation technology to determine a user’s location when wagering at the site. Only bets made from within Maryland are allowed, and players trying to wager from outside state lines will be blocked from doing so.

Legalized Forms Of Gambling In Maryland

Other forms of gambling in Maryland include horse race betting, Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), sweepstakes casinos, sweepstakes poker sites, and the state lottery. DFS has been legal since 2017. Sports betting is the latest addition to the Maryland gambling scene, and one that Maryland bettors have been very much anticipating.

Maryland Online Sports Betting Overview

Maryland is home to six land-based casinos, and five are currently taking sports bets. The only non-casino facility currently offering sports wagers is Bingo World Baltimore. The state’s two racetracks, which include Pimlico Race Course (home of the Preakness Stakes), will likely want a piece of Maryland’s online sports betting industry as well.

Sports betting could also make its way to professional sports stadiums in Maryland. The Washington Commanders have already applied for licensure to offer sports betting at FedEx Field. In addition, FanDuel Sportsbook already offers online sports betting in Virginia through a partnership with Washington’s practice facility in Richmond.

The emerging Maryland market will almost certainly include DraftKings and FanDuel, which are two of the biggest names in sports betting. Other brands likely to enter the Maryland market include BetMGM, FOX Bet, PointsBet, and several others.

BetMGM operates a casino in Maryland at Washington National Harbor and also was the first to announce a partnership with the Baltimore Ravens. DraftKings and Caesars also have a sports betting partnership with the Ravens.

History Of Maryland Online Sports Betting

Online sports betting adds Maryland to the growing list of states to legalize online sports betting. The Maryland General Assembly approved a plan for online sports betting last spring, and later, the Maryland Lottery added resources on sports betting to its website.

Both retail and mobile sports betting is live in states close to Maryland like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, two of the biggest sports betting markets in the US. In both of those states, more than 80 percent of overall sports betting revenue comes from online betting.

Maryland knows that the mobile betting industry will provide a big boost to state revenue. In June, Governor Hogan released a fiery letter stating that Maryland is losing millions of dollars in economic investment and education funding because of the mobile wagering delay. As of August, mobile betting seems to be several months away from launching.

While Marylanders may have to wait a bit longer for mobile betting, they can still place sports wagers in person. In total, there are five retail casinos that are currently accepting sports bets:

  • MGM National Harbor: 101 MGM National Ave, Oxon Hill – BetMGM
  • Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland: 7002 Arundel Hills, Hanover – FanDuel
  • Horseshoe Casino Baltimore: 1525 Russell St, Baltimore – Caesars
  • Ocean Downs Casino: 10218 Racetrack Rd, Berlin – TwinSpires
  • Hollywood Casino Perryville: 1201 Chesapeake Overlook Pkwy, Perryville – Barstool

In addition, one non-casino facility, Bingo World in Baltimore, began taking sports bets in August. Bingo World is partnered with BetRivers Sportsbook. The facility is the first Maryland retail sportsbook site outside of a casino, but it is not expected to be the last.

Maryland has three off-track betting sites: Riverboat on the Potomac, Long Shot’s, and Greenmount Station. All three locations have already been given sports betting licenses, but the approval process has not yet started. It would not be surprising to see these retail sports betting locations up and running sometime in 2022.
