Maryland Sports Betting Updates: May 2023
The eagerly awaited launch of Maryland online sports betting took place on Nov. 23, in time for Thanksgiving. It got off to a fast start as data from geolocation and fraud specialist GeoComply recorded 16.5 million geolocation transactions for mobile sports betting in the state over the course of US Thanksgiving Holiday – almost double that of neighboring Virginia and more than four times that of similarly-sized Colorado.
Seven mobile sportsbooks launched when online sports betting went live in Maryland:
- DraftKings (Crown MD Online Gaming)
- Caesars Sportsbook (operator for CZR Maryland Mobile Opportunity/Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore)
- BetMGM (operator for BetMGM Maryland Sports/MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill)
- FanDuel (operator for PPE Maryland Mobile/Live! Casino and Hotel in Hanover)
- PointsBet (operator for Riverboat on the Potomac in Charles County)
- BetRivers (operator for Arundel Amusements/Bingo World in Brooklyn Park)

Betfred, partner of Long Shot’s, became Maryland’s eighth mobile sportsbook operator when it went live on Feb. 9, 2023. Fanatics, operator for Maryland Stadium Sub/Washington Commanders in Landover, went live on Jan. 20, 2023 when its retail sportsbook opened at FedEx Field.
BetParx, operator for Greenmount Station in Hampstead, was also awarded a license by the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) ahead of the Nov. 23 launch date but is still preparing to go live.
On Dec. 14, 2022, the SWARC also unanimously voted to approve Bally’s Interactive and WynnBET for mobile sports wagering licenses in Maryland. That action came after the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission had previously approved Bally’s and WynnBET for mobile sports wagering licenses. A timeline for the launch of the Bally Bet and WynnBET platforms has not been determined.
On Jan. 26, 2023, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) approved the qualifications of three sports wagering facility applicants and two mobile sports wagering applicants. The businesses are expected to be considered for license awards during the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission’s (SWARC) next scheduled meeting on Feb. 15.
SWARC is authorized to conduct a competitive process to award up to 60 mobile sports betting licenses and up to 30 Class B facility licenses. A 45-day application period ended on Oct. 21, 2022. SWARC received 21 mobile license applications and six Class B facility license applications. In total, there will be up to 110 licenses up for grabs.
Maryland residents can now enjoy one of the most robust sports betting markets in the country.

Downloading Maryland Online Sports Betting Apps
Legal online sportsbooks generally offer access to players via mobile app or a desktop browser. Mobile app downloads provide the highest degree of freedom, as Maryland’s upcoming online sportsbooks will allow players to wager from anywhere within state borders.
The desktop versions of Maryland’s online sportsbooks offer the simplicity of just visiting a sportsbook website and wagering directly from there.
Maryland Sportsbook Apps For Apple iOS Devices
Downloading mobile sportsbook apps is a quick and easy process that requires just a few simple steps. Legal mobile sportsbooks virtually always offer their apps as a free download, and mobile sports betting apps download to your mobile device in seconds in most cases.
You can download sportsbook apps using our affiliate links on our sportsbook review pages. These links take you right through the process of getting the right app on your device. You can check out any new player promotions from there, and sign up for a new account.
The mobile app version of an online sportsbook generally offers the same deposit and withdrawal options as its desktop counterpart. In addition, the companies behind these apps optimize the experience for your mobile device, putting the full-service sportsbook experience in the palm of your hand.
Maryland Sportsbook Apps For Android Devices
Most legal online sportsbooks develop mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. These are found in their respective marketplaces to download for free (App Store for iOS and Google Play for Android).
The functionality of a mobile sports betting app is the same for both Apple and Android users. People log into their accounts after opening the app and navigate through to select and place their bets. There may also be various login options available, including utilizing biometrics or a pin to bypass a typical password. In addition, some other login and deposit/withdrawal restrictions may be implemented based on the state.
Maryland Sportsbook Apps For Desktop
Most major desktop browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, allow access to online sportsbooks. A download for determining location is generally required, and some sportsbooks may require their own services. This quick process won’t harm devices and is only used to determine if the bettor is located in a legally approved area.
Like mobile apps, the desktop version of an online sportsbook uses geolocation technology to determine a user’s location when wagering at the site. However, only bets made from within Maryland are allowed, and players trying to wager from outside state lines will be blocked from doing so.

Maryland Sports Betting Bonus Offers – What To Expect
Each sportsbook app that becomes available in Maryland will offer different bonuses to new players. Some sportsbooks offer bonus bets, while other offer deposit bonuses. Other types of bonuses include first bet insurance, odds boosts, and rewards programs. Each user can claim only one bonus per sportsbook. We recommend downloading multiple Maryland sportsbook apps in order to take advantage of several great offers. Terms and conditions apply.
Bet Rebates or Bet Refunds
With bet rebates or bet refunds, you get a second chance at your first bet if you lose, which is a great advantage.
How these offers work is that if your first bet loses, you get a refund, which will be given in the form of site credit.
FanDuel, BetRivers, BetMGM, and PointsBet are operators in Maryland that offer a refund if your first bet loses.
Be sure to read the terms and conditions of each offer before opting in.
Deposit Bonus
A deposit bonus is where the sports betting app matches your deposit by a certain percentage up to a maximum amount.
For example, the DraftKings Maryland welcome bonus features a 20% deposit match, up to $1,000, which gets you $1 in bonus money for every $25 you wager.
With deposit bonuses, it’s important to note the playthrough requirements of each offer, as each platform is different. Playthrough requirements refer to how many times you have to bet the bonus amount before you can cash out associated winnings.
Insurance Offers
An insurance offer is a common ongoing promotion at online sportsbooks. It usually has to do with receiving all or part of a wager back depending on how things pan out. Here are some examples:
- Parlay Insurance: If one leg loses a four-leg parlay, you get your bet back up to $25.
- In-Game Event Insurance: If your team loses but a certain player scores, you get your bet back up to $20.
Keep in mind that insurance offers generally have odds requirements that must be met in order to qualify.
Odds Boosts
Some of the most exciting sportsbook bonuses involve odds boosts. The biggest and best sportsbook apps in Maryland will likely offer tons of odds boosts once they are live. Odds boosts are exactly what they sound like: the profit margin on a bet is boosted by a certain amount. For example, BetMGM Parlay Plus increases the profit on a seven-leg parlay by 40%. DraftKings offers regular odds boosts that can be found on the home screen of the mobile app. During the Major League Baseball season, a popular DraftKings odds boost involves users getting a 20% profit boost on any MLB same game parlay.
Refer a Friend
Most online sportsbooks will reward you for bringing friends onto the app. The terms of refer-a-friend programs vary wildly by each platform, but most give you some incentive for sharing your unique join link with other bettors. At DraftKings, you can refer-a-friend using your unique promo code, and then both you and your friend you recruited to the app will receive $100 in bonus bets. As always, be sure to read the terms and conditions.

Maryland Online Sports Betting Overview
Maryland is home to six land-based casinos and nine retail sportsbooks. The state’s Thoroughbred racetracks, which include Pimlico Race Course (home of the Preakness Stakes) and Laurel Park, will likely want a piece of Maryland’s online sports betting industry as well.
Sports betting could also make its way to professional sports stadiums in Maryland. The Washington Commanders have already applied for licensure to offer sports betting at FedEx Field. In addition, FanDuel Sportsbook already offers online sports betting in Virginia through a partnership with Washington’s practice facility in Richmond.
The emerging Maryland market already includes DraftKings and FanDuel, two of the biggest names in sports betting. Other brands likely to enter the Maryland market include Betfred, BetPARX, Fanatics, and several others.
BetMGM operates a casino in Maryland at Washington National Harbor and was the first to announce a partnership with the Baltimore Ravens. DraftKings and Caesars also have a sports betting partnership with the Ravens.
Revenue Generated By Maryland Sports Betting
With mobile sports betting now live in Maryland, the state’s seven online sportsbooks handled $422,657,954 in January 2023. That amount included $21,798,149 in free promotional play provided to customers by sportsbooks, which is deducted from the taxable win.
Maryland’s 10 retail and seven mobile sportsbooks combined for $441,481,779 in handle and generated $2,114,613 in contributions to the state during January 2023. Each sportsbook contributes 15% of its taxable win to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs.
Maryland Sports Betting Handle For January 2023:
- Retail: $18,823,825
- Mobile: $422,657,954 (includes $21,798,149 in free promotional wagers)
- Combined: $441,481,779
Maryland’s sports wagering regulations do not limit the amount of a sportsbook’s promotional play in its first full fiscal year of operation. However, after the first full fiscal year, regulations require that a sportsbook’s promotional play amount may not exceed 20% of its taxable win from the prior year.
Maryland’s sports wagering market launched in December 2021 and currently includes 10 retail locations and eight mobile sportsbook operators. Additional retail locations and mobile sportsbooks are expected to launch in the near future.
The Path To Legal Maryland Sports Betting
After Maryland sports betting was approved in a referendum, the state has now joined the rapidly expanding US legal market. Governor Larry Hogan signed off on HB 940 to officially legalize the activity in Maryland, and the state legislature passed a comprehensive sports betting bill last spring. Retail sports betting launched in December 2021 at five sportsbooks.
Now that online sports betting has gone live in the state, Maryland is part of the growing list of states to legalize online sports betting. The Maryland General Assembly approved a plan for online sports betting last spring, and later, the Maryland Lottery added resources on sports betting to its website.
Both retail and mobile sports betting is live in states close to Maryland like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, two of the biggest sports betting markets in the US. In both of those states, more than 80 percent of overall sports betting revenue comes from online betting.
The launch of Maryland online sports betting will provide a big boost to state revenue. In June, Governor Hogan released a fiery letter stating that Maryland was losing millions of dollars in economic investment and education funding because of the mobile wagering delay.
Before sportsbooks were permitted to launch, they had to successfully complete controlled demonstrations of their systems and procedures, which involves accepting wagers at specific dates and times approved by Maryland Lottery and Gaming. A controlled demonstration is the final step before a launch. No business is permitted to launch before being awarded a license by SWARC and successfully completing its controlled demonstration.
