Will Indiana Legalize Online Casinos?

Two bills in the state legislature that would have legalized online casinos in Indiana have failed to pass. Bills HB 1356 and HB 1337 suffered from lack of support, which has killed the bill, at least for this session of the legislature. So the question still remains: Will Indiana legalize online casinos or not? 

When Will Online Casinos In Indiana Launch?

The two Indiana gaming bills would have authorized licensed operators to run online gambling sites in the state. There are a few reasons why this session in early 2022 didn’t succeed in passing them. Passing a bill is a multi-step process. There was not enough support, and the 2022 legislative session was too short. 

Senator John Ford, a huge supporter of the bills, was quoted as saying: “I just think it was really bad timing for us. We’ve got an election year, and we’re projected to have $5 billion in excess revenue.”

For a while Indiana legislators were opposed to the expansion of online gambling, so the legalization of sports betting was a good sign. The state’s legislative session only runs until March 14, however. So this failure means for this current period, there is no possibility of online casinos in Indiana launching in the immediate future. 

It is still possible that online casinos will be legalized in Indiana in late 2022, however. 

Indiana 2022 Online Casino Update

This development leaves Indiana behind other states that have caught onto the benefits of legalizing iGaming. Neighboring state Michigan legalized online casinos in January 2021. New York sports betting and Louisiana sports betting rang in a new year of onling gambling expansion in January 2022, but NY online casinos were not part of the deal, nor have their been any notable talks of Louisiana online casinos.

Judging by other launches in various states, Indiana residents can expect to benefit from the legalization of online casinos. In most states, online casinos must be supervised by a committee or organization that makes sure games are fair and the casino operators are legit. 

Many states also have a partnership between existing brick and mortar casinos, so players can play with one account. For fans of land-based casinos, online casinos often have the same familiar slots, but because they are online they can have hundreds more too.
