A legislative effort is underway in the New Jersey Senate to make a small but significant change to the state’s online gambling laws, specifically concerning inactive accounts. If the bill passes, it will be a boon to infrequent gamblers. Under the current law, such players need to worry about potentially forfeiting money in their accounts if […]

Sen. Addabbo Kills 2023 Online Casino Legislation to Start Over in 2024
New York will be back in the conversation as an iGaming expansion candidate this year, but the effort may take a little while to build steam. Sen. Joseph Addabbo, the foremost proponent of online casinos in the legislature, has gotten the ball rolling by officially killing last year’s S4856 so he can start anew. New York’s legislative sessions last for […]
States to Watch in 2024: Iowa — Time to Stop Flying Under the Radar?
Iowa hasn’t yet had its turn in the spotlight as a candidate for online casino expansion, but it’s likely to be part of the conversation in 2024. Republican state Rep. Bobby Kaufmann introduced a bill in 2022 and again in 2023. But by his own admission, it was only to get the ball rolling, and had […]
States to Watch in 2024: Rhode Island — How Much Will Bally’s Monopoly Be Worth?
Rhode Island is set to become the first state since 2021 to launch a legal online casino market, but questions hover over its chosen regulatory model. Sticking with the same plan they used for retail casinos and online sports betting, lawmakers awarded exclusive market access to a single operator — Bally’s — in partnership with the […]
States to Watch in 2024: Illinois — Will the Internet Gaming Act Progress or Continue to Gather Dust?
Illinois is probably a state that’s going to be thinking about legalizing online casinos for a long time. Many state residents would welcome them. There’s an established online sports betting industry in the state, and many companies involved with online gaming have a retail presence there. Until Illinois online casinos become a reality, the state’s name […]
States to Watch in 2024: Maryland — Is an Online Casino Referendum on the Horizon?
Maryland might just be the best bet the US has for online casino expansion in 2024, but it will need a referendum to get there. A 2023 online casino bill went nowhere, but that’s because a ballot question would have needed to wait for the 2024 election regardless. It served to get the conversation started, […]
States to Watch in 2024: New Hampshire — Another iGaming Monopoly in the Making?
New Hampshire’s chances of passing an online casino bill in 2024 are disproportionate to the amount of attention it has been getting. That’s because of its small population and the likelihood that any potential iGaming market will end up a monopoly. In that regard, it stands to be to 2024 what Rhode Island was to 2023. Its success […]
States to Watch in 2024: New York — Will a $1 Billion Promise Sway the Naysayers?
State Sen. Joe Addabbo couldn’t persuade his fellow lawmakers to authorize New York online casinos in 2023, but his efforts garnered more attention and media coverage than any other iGaming expansion legislation in the country. Already, he’s laying the groundwork to try again in 2024, telling City & State readers that New York “can’t turn down” another […]
Double-Up Blackjack: BetMGM & Borgata Online Casino Launch Table Game Variant in New Jersey
Blackjack fans in New Jersey have a new variant they can try at BetMGM-owned online casinos: Double-Up Blackjack. BetMGM partnered with the game’s owner, Score Gaming, for the rights to offer it. Double-Up Blackjack is the most popular game in Score’s line of “End 16” games. In these games, a dealer’s 16 results in players’ bets being returned to […]
