Online Casino Legalization in 2023 – What Are the Odds for NY, IL, and IN?
Sadly, 2022 has been a dud of a year when it comes to states legalizing online casino. At least 2021 saw Connecticut legalize and launch within the same calendar year. Before that, we have to go back to Michigan, and the tail end of 2019, to see an iGaming bill receive a governor’s signature. Of course, lawmakers have had a few […]
What Does 2023 Hold for the US Online Gambling Industry?
As Jan. 1 approaches, most of us in the gambling media are doing the same thing: Preparing to peer into our crystal balls and write up our predictions for the coming year. But before I do that, for the sake of transparency, let’s look at my score for 2022 predictions. Sadly, Online Poker Report is no more, […]
Online Gambling 2022: Top Stories and Takeaways
How should one characterize the year that’s soon coming to an end? On the one hand, 2022 has represented a world getting back to normal after the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. On the other, it hasn’t really been all that normal. There’s a global economic crisis to contend with, and a war raging […]
Opinion: Gambling Advertising Overload Hurts the Chances of Further Expansion
US sports betting has spread like wildfire. Before 2018, it wasn’t even possible to legalize it anywhere outside of Nevada. Soon, over half of the 50 states will have online sports betting, and several more have at least retail betting. So gambling advertising overload may already have consequences. Because by comparison, other forms of online […]
Hustler Casino Investigation Concludes, Provides Neither Surprises Nor Resolution
The official investigation into Garrett Adelstein’s cheating allegations against Robbi Jade Lew has reached its conclusion. But anyone who believed it would settle the issue probably hasn’t followed previous cheating scandals in the live poker world. By their nature, these scenarios seldom reach a satisfying conclusion. A very clumsy cheater might be caught red-handed. Hand histories […]
Marvel Snap Strategy: a Non-Gambling Game for the Poker Mindset
Marvel Snap is among the latest free-to-play titles taking the mobile gaming world by storm. It’s not a gambling game, but strategically, it requires you to be comfortable taking risks. The most common point of comparison for Snap is HearthStone. That’s because it’s the brainchild of Ben Brode, who led Blizzard’s HearthStone team until he left the company […]
There’s a Lot to Love in the First Draft of Indiana’s 2023 iGaming Bill
Indiana is on the shortlist of states most likely to pass online gambling legislation in 2023. Sen. Jon Ford and Rep. Ethan Manning led a short-lived effort to do so in 2022. Unfortunately, that bill stalled almost as soon as it was introduced. However, there’s reason to be more optimistic in 2023. Firstly, the longer the Hoosier State’s existing online sports […]
WSOP Announces Dates, Mystery Bounty Opener for 2023 Live Series
It looks like things will be truly back to normal for the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2023. Traditionally, the WSOP announces dates for each year’s series in the final weeks of the preceding year. Today, we got that announcement. Caesars, which owns the series, has confirmed that the 54th annual WSOP will take place from May 30 to July 18, 2023. That, […]
Ontario Premier Accuses Auditor General of ‘Jurisdictional Creep’ After Casino Sting
Ontario casinos caught individuals attempting to launder money and set off an unexpected series of events last week. On Wednesday, Ontario Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk released her annual report that revealed she sent those individuals to the casinos in an undercover capacity. On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford characterized Lysyk’s actions as “jurisdictional creep.” He said she […]
AGA Estimates Show a Sizeable Black Market With a Silver Lining
The regulated gambling industry in the US has been drawing more than the usual level of criticism of late. It’s probably no coincidence, then, that the American Gaming Association (AGA) chose this moment to release a study highlighting the size of the black and gray markets. If we take the AGA’s numbers as accurate, Americans are spending $44.2 billion on illegal […]
