Ontario’s Online Gambling Market Faces Its First Legal Challenge
We always knew this was coming: Ontario’s online gambling privatization plan will face a legal challenge. The only question was where it would come from. In April, Canada’s largest and most populous province attempted something no other Canadian jurisdiction had tried. Under Canadian federal law, all gambling must be conducted and managed by provincial governments. […]
Maryland Online Sports Betting Starts Today, Will Online Casinos Come Next?
As of 9 a.m. this morning (Nov 23), Maryland sports bettors no longer need to visit a retail sportsbook to get some skin in the game. Online wagering is now live in the Old Line State, with seven brands to choose from on launch day. Retail sports betting in Maryland has been available since December 2021. However, […]
Major iGaming States Back to Setting Records After Slow Summer
The year’s final quarter has traditionally been a good one for online casino revenue. So far, it looks like Q4 2022 will be no exception. Regulators released their October online gambling revenue figures late last week. The four largest online casino states – New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Connecticut – each posted all-time records for daily average […]
Rivalry Unveils New Casino Experience, Banking on 90’s Nostalgia
When it comes to competing in crowded markets, the conventional wisdom is “differentiate or die.” Canadian esports company Rivalry is taking that advice to heart as it attempts to break into the online casino space. Today, it unveiled its new casino product, with the eyebrow-raising moniker Casino.exe. As the name suggests, Casino.exe leans heavily into nostalgia for a […]
Former Gambling Industry Attorney Brittnie Watkins Takes Over as NGCB Chair
There’s a new hand on the tiller at the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB). Governor Steve Sisolak’s office announced the resignation of Board chair J. Brin Gibson yesterday. Gibson had informed the Governor of his intentions earlier in the year, but the public announcement was delayed until his departure was imminent. Gibson’s replacement will be Board member Brittnie […]
Alabama: a Case Study in the Counterproductive Nature of Prohibition
Alabama is among the most conservative states in the US on many fronts, including gambling. Only in Utah will you find fiercer moral opposition. Such is Alabama’s historical tendency towards prohibitionist policies that it feels appropriate that the state flag bears a big, red X. Even so, Alabama has recently been casting its eyes in the direction […]
High 5 Games Makes Pennsylvania Debut at BetRivers, PlaySugarHouse
Pennsylvania slots lovers finally have access to games from one of the industry’s most prolific developers, High 5 Games. High 5 received its license from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board this summer. Contrary to our expectations here at Bonus, however, it has taken several months for its content to come to market. High 5 has plenty of existing partnerships in other […]
No Clear Winner in Fox-Flutter Arbitration Decision, But Fox Bet Might Be the Loser
Arbitration has concluded for Fox Corporation and Flutter Entertainment, on two out of three issues, anyway. One aspect of that decision could mean the future disappearance of yet another US online gambling brand. Fox initiated arbitration in April 2021 because of a difference in how the two companies interpreted a contractual clause. Flutter believed it had granted Fox the option […]
Powerball Draw Delayed as Massive Ticket Sales Cause Logistical Disruption
The awkwardly long drumroll is a classic stage gag. The spotlight goes on, the drumroll begins, and the moment the audience has been waiting for… doesn’t happen. That’s essentially what happened – or rather, didn’t happen – with last night’s record-setting Powerball jackpot draw. Powerball draws normally take place Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11 p.m. […]
‘I Should Have Won By Now!’ – The Mathematics of Losing Streaks
A roulette player is down to his last few chips. He’s missed his lucky number at least 36 times in a row. Surely Lady Luck owes him one by now. All those chips go on 17. Yet the ball lands on 35, for the third time in the last ten spins. Now broke, the player […]
