What Is Mega Millions?

The Mega Millions lottery is a bi-weekly drawing game, with jackpots that can reach into billion-dollar territory and beyond. Tickets for Mega Millions can be purchased legally in 45 states, making the game a truly national lottery.

Players across the US can watch as the jackpot escalates after each drawing until a lucky winner claims the grand prize. To win the jackpot, players must pick five numbers correctly out of a drum of 70 white balls, as well as choose the correct “MegaBall” number from a separate drum of 25 balls.

Picking all six of those numbers correctly can yield historically large payouts, reaching up to nine figures or more. The chance to win these massive prizes makes Mega Millions one of the most popular lotteries in the US.

More than 15 states offer legal online purchases of Mega Millions tickets, with some of those states also providing automatic online redemption of winning tickets.

How To Use A Lottery Number Generator For Mega Millions

A lottery number generator acts as a randomizer that produces unbiased strings of numbers for use in a lottery drawing game. Using a lottery number generator can save time and offers the opportunity to use completely random picks in the Mega Millions drawings.

Bonus.com offers several lottery generator tools. Our main lottery generator page presents a user-friendly interface, producing quick random entries that can be used for Mega Millions, Powerball, and other national lotteries.

The Mega Millions Generator offers even more options, specifically geared toward Mega Millions. This Bonus.com tool allows you to pick up to six randomized lines at once, including the option to mix numbers of your choice with random numbers.

Our Mega Millions Generator tool displays the “Hottest” and “Coldest” numbers from the past month, year, and entire history of Mega Millions as well.

Mega Millions Drawing Days

Mega Millions plays twice every week, with drawings taking place every Tuesday and Friday. Each draw commences at 11 pm Eastern Time from the WSB-TV studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Lottery officials conduct each drawing.

The winning numbers from the latest drawing are displayed on the Mega Millions website homepage, as well as a link to past winning numbers.

You can also find the winning numbers on the Bonus.com Mega Millions page. This page displays the winning numbers from the last ten drawings, and also allows you to check numbers from the past years’ worth of drawings to see if they’ve won.

Claiming Mega Millions Winnings

When playing Mega Millions online, state-regulated lottery apps will automatically credit your online account when you win. Playing online eliminates the need to cash in a winning ticket, as online lotteries immediately pay out winning entries.

If you buy a lottery ticket online using the Jackpocket app, Jackpocket will automatically credit your account on wins of $600 or less. For wins of more than $600, Jackpocket will securely send you the physical ticket, which then must be redeemed at a Mega Millions claim center.

Physical Mega Millions tickets that win $600 or more must also be taken to a Mega Millions claim center for redemption. Wins of less than $600 can be cashed out at any authorized lottery retailer.

Are Mega Millions Winnings Taxable?

Mega Millions winnings, along with any other kind of lottery win, must be legally taxed as normal income. A Mega Millions win is subject to federal taxes, as well as state withholdings in states that apply taxes to lottery winnings.

On wins of $5,000 or more, Mega Millions will automatically withhold 24% for federal taxes. Some wins require that additional federal taxes be paid, and those payments are the responsibility of the lottery winner.

State tax laws toward lottery winnings vary across different jurisdictions. Again, it’s the player’s responsibility to find out the state stance and tax rate toward lottery winnings.

The History Of Mega Millions In The US

The origins of Mega Millions goes back to a multi-state lottery called The Big Game, which started in August 1996. The original version of The Big Game included six states, and the game was renamed The Big Game Mega Millions in 2002.

In 2010, the Mega Millions Group entered into an agreement with the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), the consortium of state lotteries which operates Powerball. The two national lotteries agreed to allow sales for both lotteries in all participating states.

This agreement led to the current US landscape, with both Mega Millions and Powerball offering purchases in 45 states. A 2011 change in federal stance on online gambling paved the way for states to start offering legal online lottery purchases.

Illinois became the first US state to legalize online lottery and has offered online purchases since 2012. Over the past decade, online lottery has expanded to include more than 15 states.

The Biggest Mega Millions Wins Of All Time

$1.537 million (Oct. 23, 2018) – The largest jackpot in the history of Mega Millions paid out more than $1.5 billion. The jackpot went to a single winner in South Carolina and stands as the biggest single-ticket lottery win in history.

$656 million (Mar. 30, 2012) – A trio of winning tickets got a three-way split of the second-biggest Mega Millions jackpot ever. Winning tickets from Illinois, Maryland, and Kansas picked all six Mega Millions numbers correctly.

$648 million (Dec. 17, 2013) – The third-largest Mega Millions jackpot of all time produced a nearly $650 million winner. Two tickets, one from California and one from Georgia, divided the winner’s prize.

Are Online Mega Millions Purchases Safe?

Purchasing a Mega Millions ticket online offers a secure way to play the multi-state lottery, but only if the ticket is purchased through legal means. Several states offer online Mega Millions purchases through their own state lotteries, but these purchases are only legal in states that have legalized online lottery sales.

The Jackpocket mobile app extends online Mega Millions purchases to several other states. Jackpocket functions as a legal digital courier service for lottery tickets and provides another legal way to play Mega Millions online.

Outside of state-regulated online lottery and Jackpocket, any other online service offering Mega Millions purchases is doing so illegally.

Using these illegal online lottery outlets is not only against, but it could result in your money going down the drain. The worst-case scenario is that you might successfully pick winning numbers, only to find your ticket isn’t valid because it’s been purchased illegally.
