Online gambling in New York is only just beginning to take off. In terms of online sports betting, the state lagged behind some of its early-adopting neighbors such as New Jersey and Pennsylvania. New York legalized sportsbooks last year, and platforms began to launch in early 2022. The sports betting market in New York is currently thriving.

New York online casinos, however, remain illegal in the state for now. That said, there are sites where New Yorkers can play casino-style games for free online and redeem winnings for cash prizes and more. These sites are called sweeps or social casinos, and all of the best are available in the Empire State.

How Do Social Casino Sites In New York Work?

Social casinos operate under a promotional sweepstakes model and are authorized to operate even in markets where real money online casinos aren’t allowed.

The way they work is similar to mobile games such as Clash of Clans or Candy Crush. You get free credits, and you also can use money to purchase credits. You then use those credits, often called Gold Coins, to play casino-style games. Playing with GC is just for fun.

There’s a second in-game token, on some sites referred to as Sweeps Coins. You always get Sweeps Coins for free. You get them by logging in, winning contests, and as a free add-0n to any purchase. When you play with Sweeps Coins and win, you can redeem the winnings for cash prizes, gift cards, and more.

We’ll offer more detail below, but that’s the gist of it. Social casinos allow you to purchase site tokens to play for fun, though you do have a chance to redeem Sweeps Coins for cash prizes and gift cards if you’re lucky.

It’s possible The Empire State could legalize and regulate real-money online casinos in the future. If that happens, expect New York to be one of the top-performing online casino markets in the US. For now, New York bettors can enjoy social casinos and sports betting.

Are New York Online Casinos For Real Money Legal?

Right now, legal real money New York online casinos are not prohibited in the state.  New York was a bit behind the times, only legalizing sports betting in 2021 (and launching in 2022) when many of its regional neighbors had already been live for years.

Sports betting had to overcome various hurdles, especially since ex-Governor Cuomo was staunchly opposed to a casino-run model and preferred a government-run sportsbook landscape. The final result took a while to take shape, and it currently exists as a hybrid of the two models. Regulatory hurdles and disagreements among stakeholders led to a slow process for NY sports betting.

Proposed NY Online Casino Bill

NY S.B. 8412, sponsored by Senator Joseph Addabbo of the 15th Senate District, aims to authorize and legalize New York online casinos. On April 25, 2022, the bill passed committee vote unanimously with 5 yes and 0 nays. At its most basic level, this bill adds a new article to the existing racing, pari-mutuel wagering, and breeding law that NY already has in place to allow a framework for iGaming to be built upon. It is expected to be further discussed in the next New York legislative session.

Given the state’s sports betting history, it’s reasonable to assume NY online casinos will come to the state eventually. Most would probably consider this a “when” instead of an “if,” especially since New Jersey Online Casinos, Pennsylvania Online Casinos, and Michigan Online Casinos have see massive success with their markets.

There have been a few tepid measures to legalize online casinos in New York, but none have made it very far. This does suggest it’s coming, although the timeline is unclear and hard to predict. All signs point to an eventual New York online casino market becoming a reality. For now, it’s a waiting game.

Revenue Generated From Online Casinos In Legal States

When one looks at the revenue generated by already-legal online casino states, there’s no question why passing S.B. 8412 is an appealing task for the NY government. We’ve compiled a revenue table below to illustrate just how much iGaming can contribute to a legal state.

StateRevenue (2021)
Michigan$66,193,027
New Jersey$107,053,938
Pennsylvania$88,914,666

Legal New York Online Casinos  – Coming Soon

New York still needs to legalize online casinos and set forth regulations governing them. Once New York’s online casino market goes live, you can expect some of the top brands to enter the fray and bring their offerings to Empire State players. Here are three of the top contenders.

BetMGM Casino

BetMGM logo

BetMGM’s offering is backed by a massive land-based casino conglomerate, so its portfolio is expansive and ever-growing. The online casino is, simply put, one of the best you can find in any legal market. When BetMGM online casino comes to New York, it will likely be one of the best options for players in the state.

Bolstered by an incredible slots library, live dealer games, table game options, and more, BetMGM is a top recommendation for almost any online casino player.

The welcome bonus at BetMGM varies by state. In New York upon launch, we expect it will include a deposit match—likely 100% up to $1,000—and a no deposit bonus of around $25 or so. We’ll update this page when we know more, but that’s a good starting point if you’re trying to predict BetMGM NY’s online casino bonus.

Caesars Casino

Caesars casino logo

Here’s another huge casino company that made its way into the online space in a big way. Caesars has earned its strong reputation among online casino players in markets where it’s live already, such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Caesars has plenty of slots, table games, live dealer titles, and more. It’s an all-around juggernaut of an online casino, and it should be on the radar of any NY online casino hopefuls.

Caesars Casino’s welcome bonus is different in each state where it operates. The New Jersey bonus at Caesars is a $10 no deposit bonus plus a 200% deposit match up to $200. Expect something similar in New York when the platform goes live.

DraftKings Casino

draftkings logoDraftKings may be best known as a sportsbook, but the company has carved a name for itself in the casino space, too. The online casino sets itself apart with interesting game themes unique to the platform. Plus, DK online casino players get access to one of the most streamlined and functional apps available in any online gambling market.

DraftKings offers a casino bonus in three parts: 1) $60 free for signing up, 2) $25 on deposit, and 3) a 100% deposit match up to $2,000 with 10x playthrough. That’s one of the best in the business, and it should be at the top of any New Yorker’s list if in fact DraftKings brings the bonus to the Empire State.

Legal NY Online Casinos vs. Offshore Online Casino

If you want safety, security, and guaranteed fairness when you play, the clear choice is legal online casinos. Legal state casinos are fully regulated and monitored by state government agencies (for example, the Division of Gaming Enforcement in NJ and the Michigan Gaming Control Board in MI). This means that their games are guaranteed to use fair random number generation to determine wager outcomes, their player protection is strong (and often the same protocol that online banks use), and they are held accountable through the entire online gambling process. For these reasons and more, you can rest assured that you’re protected while you’re playing.

On the other hand, offshore online casinos aren’t necessarily held to the same standards. Depending on which country they’re registered out of, they may have very limited regulations or even none at all. If something goes wrong while playing at an offshore online casino, you have no guarantee that you or your money will be protected. For that reason, we will only ever recommend legal state casinos. You can learn more about our process by reading about how we rank online casinos.

A Timeline Of Online Gambling In New York

Through the passage of the New York Casino Gambling Amendment, Proposal 1, New York voters officially legalized land-based sports betting in The Empire State. Four new casinos were slotted to offer sports betting, pending the federal legalization of sports betting.

The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, otherwise known as PASPA, is overturned by the US Supreme Court, effectively ending the federal ban on sports betting. Although it came years after the 2013 state-level legalization, this enabled New York to begin crafting the sports betting industry in their state immediately.

Still without online sports betting, the first retail sportsbooks begin to open in NY. Many reputable and typically online-based companies opened their physical locations to start offering wagers to players. Larger names included DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars Sportsbook.

The New York state government begins to lay out the framework for online NY sportsbooks. This begins with a state budget bill, and an official launch date is targeted for early 2022.

Online sports betting officially launches in New York in early January 2022. Almost immediately, NY surpasses Nevada and NJ with $2.4 billion in wagers in the first five weeks of betting. NY sports bettors can finally wager on their favorite sports, teams, and players.

Fresh off the heels of NY’s sports betting launch, New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo introduces S.B. 8412, a bill to legalize New York online casinos. Online casinos would be regulated by the New York State Gaming Commission. While the bill didn’t manage to slip into this year’s legislative session, it will almost certainly be considered next year.

The Best Social Casino Sites In New York

Real money casinos aren’t allowed in New York, but there is a great alternative option if you’re hankering for some slots or table games: social casinos.

Social casinos operate in almost every US state, providing casino game enthusiasts with a solid way to get into the game. The most popular site is Chumba Casino, though there are several other great choices in our list below. Gambino Casino and b spot Casino are two relatively new choices to add to the list as well.

LuckyLand Slots bonus code gets new players 7,777 FREE GC and 10 FREE SC on signup. Use this Luckyland Slots link to automatically claim the free coins, no purchase required. That gets new players more free coins on signup than any other slots-focused social casino, which means decent odds of winning enough SC to redeem a cash prize and more. Just imagine winning a six-figure progressive jackpot at LuckyLand Slots with that 10 FREE SC.

LuckyLand also offers a rewards program with loyalty levels based on how much you play. The higher your loyalty level, the bigger your benefits become. This is unique to LuckyLand Slots, as most social casinos with sweepstakes games don’t offer a rewards program. Plus, each day that you log in gets you progressively more free coins.

For players who like slots tournaments with prize pools, LuckyLand offers hourly 50 SC minimum slots tournaments every day, and some of its most popular slots are eligible to play. Plus, 50 SC is just the minimum, with most hourly slots tournaments reaching well over 100 SC.

Pulsz Casino offers the biggest variety of slots, the largest progressive jackpots, and it’s one of the few social/sweepstakes casinos that offers table games like blackjack and roulette. The Pulsz promo code gets New York players 2.3 Sweepstakes Coins (SC) free on signup, no purchase necessary. You can also get 15 SC free with a $9.99 GC purchase, or 30 SC free with a $19.99 GC purchase. Sign up at Pulsz today to claim.

The promotions don’t end at the signup bonus either. Pulsz promo codes for existing users include 1 free SC every day that you log in to your account, tons of daily slots tournaments, and promotional sweepstakes giveaways. It’s rare when you don’t have at least a little something at your disposal at Pulsz.

The only notable downside to Pulsz Casino is the prize redemption minimum, which is 100 SC. That’s standard across other social casinos like Chumba, but it’s a bit higher than the Funzpoints Casino prize minimum.

Global Poker is, as its name strongly emphasizes, an online poker site. The Funzpoints promo code gets New York players 250 Premium Funzpoints on signup, plus a 100% purchase bonus up to 2,000 Premium Funzpoints free (worth $20). If you use the free credits to win 2,000 Premium Funzpoints or more, you can redeem for a cash prize. Sign up at Funzpoints now to claim.

Funzpoints Casino offers tons of slots and a few versions of keno. And while it doesn’t offer table games like blackjack or roulette, it does have its advantages over Pulsz Casino. For one, the minimum prize redemption is $20 (rather than the standard $100). Plus, playing in fun mode can still win you cash prizes, because playing the games with both Standard Funzpoints and Premium Funzpoints earn entries to the daily $1,000 jackpot prize draw. At other social and sweepstakes casinos, playing with fun credits is simply to play the games without the opportunity to win a cash prize.

Still, Funzpoints offers fewer slots than Pulsz. Funzpoints also doesn’t offer a daily login bonus, which is pretty standard across the other social/sweepstakes sites. So that knocks it down on our list of best overall social and sweepstakes casinos in New York. Thankfully, you can join all sites to claim all signup bonuses.

Guide To New York Social Casinos

Looking to play casino-style games legally in New York? As it stands, social casinos like Chumba Casino, Luckyland Slots, and Pulsz Casino remain your best options. Here’s a full guide to using the sites, including everything you need to know.

How Do Social Casinos Work In New York?

Social casinos use a different model from real-money online casinos, which allows them to operate in most US states, New York included. To play at a social casino, you simply sign up and create an account. You’ll get a small amount of fun-play coins, which are often branded as Gold Coins, and a smaller amount of Sweeps Coins. You can play for fun with the Gold Coins or similar tokens (called Standard funzpoints at Funzpoints Casino), and you can win more, but they’ll never be withdrawable. Consider them like play money. Sweeps Coins, if you play with them and win, can be redeemed for cash prizes and more. At Funzpoints Casino, they are called Premium funzpoints.

How Do You Redeem Cash Prizes By Playing Online?

You can redeem Sweeps Coins for cash prizes and gift cards, but only after you’ve played with them and won. You get Sweeps Coins when you sign up, through daily login bonuses, by winning contests, or by using a mail-in redemption system. Normally, you’ll play for fun using the standard currency at a social casino. However, you can switch over to playing with Sweeps Coins, which is when things get interesting. If you play and win with Sweeps Coins, you can then redeem those won coins for cash prizes, gift cards, and more depending on the site.

How Do You Access Promotional Sweepstakes and Social Casino Sites In New York?

All of the sites we have discussed are available in New York, but some don’t offer an app. Instead, you can play from your computer by visiting the social casino’s website. You can play on mobile, but you’ll have to use your mobile browser.

Head to your preferred social/sweeps casino’s website and start the signup process to play.

How Do Purchases Work At New York’s Social Casino Sweeps Sites?

Prices vary at sweeps and social casinos. Generally, you’ll get a handful of standard coins and a few sweepstake coins just for signing up. If you run out, you can purchase more GC, and this usually unlocks more free SC as well. For example, Pulsz offered me a deal of 16,125 Gold Coins, the game coin that can’t be redeemed, for just $9.99. With that purchase, I would also get 15 Sweepstakes Coins. GC varies in pricing, but you can usually expect to get a hefty amount of standard currency and a good chunk of Sweeps Coins when you make a purchase.

What Are The Sweepstakes and Social Casino Redemption Options?

Redemption requires a few extra steps. First, you have to play with Sweeps Coins and win, thus giving you a coin or token that is redeemable. When you’re ready to redeem, you’ll have to request a withdrawal and complete a few steps to confirm your age and identity. Once you do so, you’ll be able to redeem cash prizes or gift cards.

What Are The Bonuses At Social and Sweeps Casinos In New York?

Bonuses vary by site. Most sites will give you a bunch of standard currency to kickstart your playing experience when you sign up. You’ll also get some premium coins just for signing up. In addition, existing players are treated to various bonuses for signing on each day. These vary, too, but they usually include some standard currency and a smaller amount of premium currency.

Is It Safe To Use Social Casinos in New York?

Short answer: yes.  Social casinos are safe to use and legal, and New York players need not worry when playing at them. They’re legal in the Empire State.

Are Social Casinos Legal in New York?

Yes. Social casinos are allowed to operate in New York. They are allowed because they use a sweepstakes model, in which the token that’s redeemable for cash prizes (Sweeps Coins) and more can be acquired for free. In short, you don’t need to worry about the legality in New York. The state allows them.

Can I Trust Social Casino Sites To Allow Me To Redeem My Winnings?

You can trust social casino sites to allow you to redeem your cash prizes and gift cards. They would not be in business and stay legal in almost all states if this was not the case.

You will need to confirm your identity, age, and location before you can fully redeem those prizes, however. Once you’ve done that, redemption only takes a few minutes to request and a few days to process.

What Are The Types Of Games Available At New York’s Social Casinos?

There are all sorts of games available at New York’s social casinos. Many of the same slots you’d find at real-money online casinos. Table games players can enjoy blackjack, and there are also versions of Keno and Jacks or Better video poker available.

Different Ways Play Casino Games In New York

Though online casinos aren’t yet available in New York, gamblers in the state still have a few options.

Play at a Social Casino

Promotional sweepstakes casinos are an excellent and legal option for New Yorkers looking to play casino games online. In general, the experience feels true to what it would be like to gamble at a real-money online casino, though there are some differences.

Mainly, you’re playing to redeem winnings for possible cash prizes and more. When you buy coins to play with, you don’t have a chance to cash those out. The purchase is final, and you can only use the in-game tokens to play the games on the site. In other words, they have no cash value. However, as you play, you can earn Sweeps Coins or you can use a mail-in offer to get some for free. When you switch to playing with Sweeps Coins, a premium currency, you can redeem winnings for cash prizes and gift cards.

The experience replicates the traditional online casino gameplay pretty well, and you’ll find lots of great games at social casinos in New York and beyond.

Play At New Jersey Online Casinos

Online casinos have been legal and live in New Jersey for years. If you live near the New Jersey border or have easy access to transportation to the Garden State, you’ve got a solid option for playing real-money online casino games.

Your first step is to get to New Jersey, whether it’s by train, bus, car, or whatever method you choose. Once you’re there, you can sign up for any of the state’s many online casino sites and start playing! This is completely legal. You do not need to be a resident of New Jersey to play at the state’s online casinos. You do need to be within the state’s border to actually bet or wager, and this will be confirmed using geolocation technology. You can even deposit while you’re not in New Jersey. You just can’t play until you’re confirmed to be within the state. Some of the best online casinos in New Jersey include Golden Nugget, Virgin, and Bally.

Play At Pennsylvania Online Casinos

Like New Jersey, Pennsylvania was a very early adopter of legal online gambling. As such, it’s had online sportsbooks and casinos for years, with a flourishing market that constantly expands with new online casino options. You only need to be located within Pennsylvania’s borders if you wish to play at the state’s online casinos. Get yourself to PA, and the rest is easy. It’s completely legal to bet this way, and your location will be confirmed using geolocation (through your phone’s GPS if you’re on mobile).

You can sign up straight from your device once you’re in Pennsylvania, then begin playing. Some of the top brands live in Pennsylvania include BetMGM, FanDuel Casino, and Caesars.
