When Will NY Online Sports Betting Launch, And What Will It Look Like?

New York online sports betting will launch in a matter of weeks. While a December 2021 launch is wishful, it’s a safe bet that New Yorkers will have access to all nine online NY sportsbooks by the end of January 2022. At worst, the launch happens a day or two before the 2022 Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, February 13, 2022.

So, the best thing a sports bettor can do is get ready for the big day. And the only way to do that is by knowing exactly what to expect when online sports betting launches in New York.

What Happens When NY Sports Betting Launches Online?

Hopefully, all nine apps launch successfully and handle the absolute onslaught of signups when they get the green light from the NYS Gaming Commission. New York has the biggest population of all the states that legalized sports betting, so these apps are going to be tested on how many users they can handle at once.

So, your best bet is to decide which online sportsbook you want to join to lock in the promo code and get right to betting. Here’s a look at what’s coming:

NY SportsbookBonus CodeApp Store RatingRetail Sportsbook
DraftKings NY Sportsbook:💰 $50 with deposit of $5 or more + 20% deposit-match up to $1,000🌟 4.8 out of 5 starsdel Lago Resort & Casino

BetRivers NY Sportsbook💰 100% deposit-match up to $250🖥 Better via web browserRivers Casino Schenectady
FanDuel NY Sportsbook💰 Risk-free bet up to $1,000🌟 4.8 out of 5 starsTioga Downs Casino Resort
BetMGM NY Sportsbook💰 Risk-free bet up to $1,000🌟 4.8 out of 5 starsBorgata Atlantic City (New Jersey)

In the section that says, “Better via web browser,” we mean that the mobile app isn’t as reliable as betting directly on the website. But the New York sports betting apps with great ratings have the same level of reliability on both their website and mobile app.

About NY Sports Betting Bonus Offers Pre-Launch

In the days leading up to the launch, online sportsbooks in New York will start offering pre-launch bonus deals. However, double-check the terms and conditions before opting in to make sure you won’t miss out on the promo code bonuses above. While the New York apps haven’t announced the deals yet, that’s often the case with pre-launch bonus deals.

But the pre-launch deal could still be better depending on the situation. For example, the FanDuel Sportsbook pre-launch promotion could be a $100 free bet, which you may prefer over a risk-free bet up to $1,000. There are also often time limits on pre-launch bonus offers, which often must be used within 7 days of launch.

The post-launch promo codes are normally larger than the pre-launch, which makes them ideal for serious bettors. The pre-launch offers are often easier to maximize because there are lower or no deposit requirements.

Set Up Your Go-To Deposit Method Before Launch

Debit and credit card deposits at online betting sites are often rejected by the issuing bank. This is part of their automated anti-fraud system, and it doesn’t reflect the legitimacy of the legal online sportsbook. But it does mean that you’ll probably want to lock down a different method ahead of time.

Alternatively, PayPal is the best, most reliable deposit and cashout method. It is accepted by all online sportsbooks coming to New York, has nearly a 100% success rate, and it’s available for both deposits and withdrawing winnings.

You can sign up for a PayPal account in just a few minutes. But you’ll need to input your banking info to transfer the funds to and from your PayPal wallet, which can take a little longer. And if you’re trying to place a legal online bet for the first time in your state, you’ll want to have all that squared away before the New York sports betting launch.

If you already have a PayPal account, you’re good to go.

What Can You Bet On In New York State?

Every college and professional sports game is fair game in New York State with one exception: in-state college schools. So, betting on Syracuse basketball won’t be available on the online sports betting apps upon launch, unfortunately. But most of the apps host free-to-play March Madness bracket tournaments, and you can bet on any of the games not involving New York schools.

On that note, the biggest sporting events immediately following the NY online sports betting launch include odds on Super Bowl 2022 on February 13, 2022, and the March Madness NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, with Selection Sunday scheduled for Sunday, March 13, 2022.

The types of online sports bets in New York will include:

  • Straight Moneyline Bets
  • Points Spreads (and alternative spreads)
  • Totals
  • Parlays (including multi-sport, same-game, and player parlays)
  • Prop Bets (player, team, and game props)
  • Team Futures (Super Bowl Champion, Stanley Cup Champion, etc.)
  • Player Futures (NBA MVP, NFL Most Regular Season Passing Yards, etc.)
  • Teasers & Pleasers

Also, off-field wagers like betting on the Oscars and e-sports may also be available depending on what the NYS Gaming Commission approves.
